Post subject:  Lock Up torque converter override switch
Been reading lately about people making a manual switch they can press to lock up the torque converter in an auto tranny

Does anyone know anything about this and if so, what wire/s would be involved on my Jimny?

Yeah I had this on My GQ patrol. It engages the solenoid that locks out the converter.

With Transfer case gearing lowered,
I no longer feel the need for a converter lock up on down hills.

Why should it get expensive?

Running with the torque converter locked IS a normal operating mode - the TC on my AW4 spends more of its time locked than it does unlocked - as far as I can tell the biggest problem you'll face if you manually lock it and forget to unlock it will be stalling the engine when you come to a stop, pretty much the same as if you forget to depress the clutch with a manual transmission.

Leave the converter locked and stall the car.
Then put it in Park, restart the car and put it in Drive without unlocking the converter and see what happens.

Yeah the clutch for torque convertor lock up aint big enough for too much load

I can see how that could hurt...

But anyway, i think i woud opt for a momentary switch, where you can hold it to lock the TC just the times when you want it.

That said, I dont know that my 1.3l petrol motor has that much engine braking anyway, perhaps a manual jimny driver can comment on that. Do they crawl down hills in low low?

Also I suspect that 1st gear is taller in an auto as well.

It would be interesting to try I reckon, if all it is is a switch hooked in to the solenoid, the cost is near zero... I reckon it would be useful for me.

I'd love if someone on here knows where the wire is. I have a multimeter though so I guess I can go chasing. But who has the time :roll:

Then what happens when you put it back in drive again? Convertor locked again. Problem un-fixored :P

No the problem was fixoreded you moroeon. You make it so its push button so it has to be re engaged. Jezz what would you know about wiring. Sounds like you have a degree in cuzz-tec circuitry :thefinger: :thefinger:
