Post subject:  Worn out Sierra gearbox. Options?

Hi everyone

I have a 1986 Sierra NT that has a very worn gearbox. The selector mechanism is very sloppy and very expensive to repair.

Is it possible to find a low Km gearbox and put a rebuild kit in it (what are my chances of finding one), or could I put a Vitara manual gearbox in it?

Has anyone put a Vitara gearbox in a Sierra? If so, what is involved.

The engine has recently been rebuilt and I want to keep that in the car.

Many thanks

Chris

With modification I can't see why you couldn't use a BenT or Petroworks bellhousing adapter to fit a Vitara 5 speed to a 1.3.
You'd have to weld up and redrill the countersunk holes from the other side.
Trans tunnel will need mods.

my four speed was pretty sloppy to and only had 90,000 k's on it untill i broke the bolt that stops the gear leaver moving from side to side the bolt that it pivets off. so i replaced it and it made it alot better the bolt bolt was all flogged out and it just ended up snapping. i think from memory it was a 8mm bolt something like that i just put a couple of nuts in it to lock it up and she was fine

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know what would be considered a realistic low Km gearbox for these beasts? I can replace bearings, syncros and seals, but replacing them is a waste of time if the selector hub is worn out (like the one I currently have).

Also if I went down the Vitara gearbox path, would I need a specially made shaft to connect from the vitara gearbox to the Sierra Transfer case?

I think early jimmy box might fit
Should be able to find one with less kms and not have to suff round with adaptors tunnel mods etc

Do they have 5 speed boxes?

Yes.

Infact the G13BB gearbox internals are completely interchangable with sierra internals.

But got_bar_work may be giving you a bit of a bumsteer there. Finding a low km's BB jimny is still going to be quite hard, as they are now 12-14 years old too.

Thanks Fatzook for the info.

I will have a better chance of getting lower Km compared to my 1986 Sierra.

Cheers
