Hey guys my son is about to go for his P plates and was planning to give him my 1991 Suzuki sierra until i found out that he couldn't drive it when he got on his P's because it has been mod plated for the upgraded motor. Just want to know if their is anyway around this because we cannot afford a different car?

fair bit of info on the TMR website, you can apply for an exemption from what I've just read regarding High Performance Vehicles & I guess a mod plated vehicle would be covered by that exemption.

I just find it fucked for the young guys and girls that do have a legit reason they need to drive such a car but fuckwits have to ruin it for everyone...

It's not like a G16b powered sierra is a performance vehicle or anything, it's one of those engine conversions you could pretty much class as necessary.

In my day, V8s were the go, nowadays, kids are not allowed to drive these, yet many a 4cylinder has more power than the early V8s I grew up with ??

You can get a expemtion p players can even drive mild turbos now with exemption in qld now its a lot easier if its a car ur parents own you need to drive

tombutt is correct. As a P plater in QLD I too have found the rules frustrating however they have recently changed. Have a read through this link: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Licensing/Get ... icles.aspx That states the rules in regards applying for exemptions and "high powered vehicles". Funnily enough, on the list of cars that could be allowed exemption are some models of Subaru WRX's so I think if you filled out the documentation correctly and clearly state your case you really shouldn't have too much of an issue.

We got an exemtion for my son because he started his apprenticeship on his P's but he could only get one that applied to driving V8 and turbo cars while he was actually at work and his boss had to do a stat dec for him.

Believe me when I say that if you try to diddle the system by saying it is the only car the family has and any of the other suggestions you will read about on places like boostcruizing etc and you get caught out it will cause some heartaches.

My nephew is in his last year as an apprentice mechanic, he is 20 years of age and still being driven to work daily by his dad because he had a minor accident and they were able to prove that his exemption had been gained through deception, he is lucky to still have a job because for the last 11 months he has not even been able to move a car around at work.

If you have another car registered to you then I dont think he will get an exemption, but in the end be honest with your application and see what happens, given car it is if common sense is taken into account you just never know.

dont be fearless or a idiot do things the right way the rules allow these situations now i know 3 or 4 p plates with turbo skylines and silvias and the alike if it fits the power to weight ratio which i have no doubt a sierra with g16 would you can drive it along as you have the letter from qld transport. doing it the dodgy way and doing it through work can end up like 2stroker said i know a person in this boat also got one for 24 hours for work and crashed there own v8 after work

You can get an exemption on restricted cars if it is below a certain power to weight ratio.. I think 125 kw / tonne. Although I'm not sure if this rule would then override the nil modifications rule..

EDIT: only applies to turbocharged and supercharged vehicles..

Thread hijack. Do you just submit the forms then qld transport decide? Or does it go through like a court hearing and decided by a magistrate? I too am in qld. Recently got my lisence back from a 2 year disqualification and really do not want to get caught driving the Sierra.

There is a couple of ways I know you can.
1. I know if you own the car before the rules came out you can get one, as I got one for my ford tx5 turbo (but I could only drive it between the hours of 5am to 11:30pm).

2. How my mate did it, his dad owned a hotrod shop and needed to drive the company car to advertise his business, and he had the same hours as me.

3. And there is another way, if you qualify for special circumstances proving that you can't afford to sell the car and buy another car because it's the only transport you have for your special circumstance.

These are personal experiences I have had through Qld transport and it costs me about $70 to apply for an exemption but there was no guarantee that I would get it but still had to pay.
But this was 3 years ago when I was on my P's.

Could you find someone who wants to swap their good 1.3 for your 1.6?

Getting it mod plated for a 1.3 again wouldn't cost much, and the whole job could be done easily in a weekend.
