So which engine are you planning on fitting?
Practically speaking, for a conservatively driven Sierra, the transfer will stand up to any LEGAL engine conversion possible. Drive it like an drunken Indian cab driver, and even the 1.3 can blow the transfer apart.
And mechanically, the bigger the reduction the weaker the gears become as they reduce in size. So, while 6.5s will give you the most torque increase, stock 1.3 ratios (2.268 Lo) gears will be the "Strongest". But it's not just the gears which can fail. High torque numbers from low reduction ratios can fracture the casing, requiring stiffening the case with a Kong girdle or similar. But again, it depends on your driving style and even terrain. Some people can run G16B's with 6.5's and never break a case, while others insist you must have a case brace as they have ripped apart the transfer while climbing rocks and spinning wheels to get traction.
It's not strictly the engine power or torque that destroys transfers, and it's not weak gearsets or even large/heavy tyres, it's sudden shock loading from poor driving style. Same stuff that also puts at risk CVs and axle splines.

Maybe try searching a teeny bit more, there has to be a lot of info on transfer cases . The sierra transfer cases are pretty tough, I don't read about many failing at all on here, and some people have some decent motors and tyres with them. If you haven't put the gears in a case yet a good idea is to get a strengthening ring to spread the load out a bit. From here: http://www.designfab.com.au/TransferRings.htmlYou can also buy a few other variations from Low Range Offroad and other sites. These sites sell the gears too You want a 1.3l case to put aftermarket low range gears in too.

As others have said, it will depend on how you drive it, and what motor you hope to put infront of it.
The greater the reduction, the smaller ther gear teeth, ( although its not a massive difference, as the diameter of the cogs increases with the tooth count).
The other concern is case strength. Adding a roctoy ring will help hold the case together, by preventing the alloy case from flexing, but that torque must go somewhere. Ideally it makes it to the wheels, but on the odd occassion, it just shatters teeth from the cogs.
I've seen standard transfer cases strip gears from all sorts of issues. Most are maintenence related though.
IMO I would say the sierra transfer is as strong as the rest of the driveline.... none of which was designed for hi power/ torque application.

Cruiser or land rover are upgrades with the lr case being closest match to Suzuki due to reduced high range with a good 3.?? Ratio low but the cruiser has a larger aftermarket backup..

Cap5ze had a 3.1 td and 38-39s at 3 tuff trucks and his case held up It had been in the car for years dd with 36 and never had a problem But the defender case would be the go if u are worried Modern motors at dungog have a few rebuilt ones for sale in their show room And could get any aftermarket things you could need for it

Rob just blew up his gears last time we drove. He drives the orange leaf spring zook that was at TT for the last few years.
He did 3 TT with the same gears. Also did about 10 other comps as well mainly running the 37 treps. He drives it like he stole it alot of the time.
I think his saving grace was his auto trans taking the load off the driveline.
All in all those gears where in his car for 8 years. They are a strong unit given the size but still like anything will break.

A mate of mine ran a sr20 non turbo on a 1.3 Sierra case, didn't break it in the time he owned it.
It was an auto, and he kept car light, with mainly zook running gear

rhett ran one in his buggy, turboed 1.3 on NOS, the custom front disconnect i believe is where he ran into issues.
they are plenty strong really as long as you run a rocktoy ring or some thing like it.
