Seeking some advice.

I have a 1992 Sierra (219000 kms on the clock). Juat purchased so don't know the real history behind it.

Sometimes when i go to start it and turn the key, i get a horrible scratch noise, and the motor doesnt turn over. I turn the key again and it will start.

2nd problem, When i press the clutch i can hear a rattling noise, when i release the clutch it goes away.

Thoughts?

first of all, welcome to AZ & what an awesome user name.

i'm no sierra expert, but the first issue sounds like the starter motor isn't meshing properly with ring gear on the fly wheel, it could be a worn starter motor or at worst a worn ring gear. your second problem sounds like it's the thrust/release bearing. pretty cheap to replace the bearing, but the gearbox or motor has to come out... while it's apart you're better off putting a clutch kit through it & get the fly wheel machined. (clutch kit will have the release bearing)

Rattling noise with clutch in could also be the spigot bearing in the flywheel, worth replacing with the clutch.
