Post subject:  Whats my misfire? G16B

My motor is a Baleno G16B, use's a Vitara cam and dizzy with the Baleno cam position sensor.

It has developed a misfire on CYL 1, I suspected a bad plug or lead. Swapping these out with bits from the G16B in my other sierra didn't help. I couldn't smell any fuel on the plug when I removed it, so I figured it was a fuel issue, possibly a blocked injector. Swapped in a working unit from the other sierra with no change.

I thought it was possible the lead to the injector was bad, so I swapped injector leads between CYL1 and CYL2. These cylinders are batch fired so it doesn't matter swapping them, but it still wont fire on CYL 1.
Possibly a fuel pressure issue but I doubt it, either way all connections were checked to make sure it wasn't sucking air. The pump is near new VL external.

So going by that, if im getting fuel and spark all that could be missing is compression? There is no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil and no smoke out the exhaust..

So im pretty much at a loss as to what I should try now.. Any ideas would be great.

do a leak down test, then you can count out any leaking valves or rings

If was leaking valve seat or cylinder rings smoky exhaust would be evident surely? I have a similar problem with g16b engined vitara, have replaced dizzy cap(white corrosion evident) rotor button(same) plugs and leads, misfire not as bad but still there!???

I expect the head is fine, it was recoed around 1500km ago. Possibly the rings but I would of expected smoke. I will run a compression test on it, don't have the bits for a leak down test available.

Not to say its your problem; but when my F10 decided to chew through oil like a 2stroke it still smoked very very little..... seemed to be burning most of it :?

The injector itself? not the lead? Oh just read the first post properly, I should just shut up and stick with flintstone cars.

I have swapped the injector with one from my soft top. Then i tried swapping the leads.

/edit. To quick 3cyl.

Haha, read my post then your first one then thought  maybe if I fix it less people would realize I'm 'tarded.
You sure it's always no.1? Also are the ecu of both cars interchangable?

Yep always cyl1, can pull a spark lead off and no change. That's pretty much how I have been testing what cylinder is not firing.

Soft top is Vitara, different ECU.

Granted worn oil rings will cause smoke but a burnt valve will not.

was the compression even with the other cylinders ?

Dry
cyl 1 150psi
cyl 2 155psi
cyl 3 158psi
cyl 4 165psi

Wet
cyl 1 175psi
cyl 2 180psi
cyl 3 185psi
cyl 4 185psi

Off the top of my head the minimum allowed was around 170psi?

did you check if your actually getting spark to the no1 cyl?
i dont mean just swapping leads

I swapped plugs and leads. Checked the new plug was sparking.

Problem found, turns out I wasn't getting strong enough spark.. A new coil fixed the problem straight up. I'm surprised it only affected cyl 1, although it has the longest lead.

yeah that compression is quite good, Great to hear you sorted the problem
