has anyone had PROBLEMS fitting it??
after trying to fit the 'NEWEST AND IMPROVED' ARB airlocker for a rear 3.9 centre of a sierra
we had a huge problem when the locker/crown wheel spun and there was .25mm gap nearly hitting the internal of the housing bearing caps... 'I think that made sense....'

Image
Image
pics explaining..
after seeing a few people, Supa slim took it ARB to ask about it...

To fix the problem they 'machine' the inside of the housing to fit the airlocker???
$175 later to fit it to the centre it's done...

WTF... why change something that worked perfectly fine.. and then cause more problems trying to get it too fit???

i notice they released a new rear locker rd208 instead of the rd88 what are the significant differences?

Im no diff man. I like boxes ( lol). But is it because maybe they bulked it up for more strength ( wild stab in the dark)

I put a RD208 in the front of my old vit (the same as a sierra rear) and didn't have to machine anything :?

yea thats what he got done.. would have been nice to get a pic of it done and seen the gap..

Im not overly sure as I don't work at ARB but.. the locker carrier is muchly larger in size..
I have one of the earlier rd88.. soo there was alot different to mine :? ..

pretty sure thats why they have done it..

Just another way to make money... sell people parts which most people can't fit at home.. and will cost them more $$$ to get it fit...
another perfect example.. the new iphone 5.. why change the fucking charger to a 9 pin instead of leaving it as the classic ipod style..
now everyone will have to buy new charger docks, blue tooth devices etc.. or an adaptor cord

Ah ok.
I guess if it happens there will be some sort of adapter.

I think the biggest change was that they "flipped" the mechanism around so they could get rid of the plastic piston that kept breaking - it also supposedly includes stronger, "timed" gears.

The crownwheel flange side is much beefier and the locker itself looks stronger, only bad thing is where the airline goes past the crownwheel. I reckon with 5.12 gears it would go straight in but no good with 3.9s. Hope they pulled the pinion out when they machined the pinion housing and washed it good. :?

They washed it good 3cyl and it came up nice

Post subject:  Re: WTF ARB new style air locker...

Since they flipped it, the seal housing air line has to run across the crown wheel.
I have the new rd206 in my jimny and im alway having problems with it. Ive had the old rd88 for 2.5 yrs and never had a problem yet.

I like the old style  but there is room for change

im thinking about locking the rear of my jim soon would it be a good idea to find a rd88 ?(proven to be good) or try a new rd208 not known what they are like? :?

Yeah I'm convinced this one would be plenty fine in a Vit also. Verm1n had a 5.12 Vit C&P in a Sierra centre housing when we were looking at the RD208 locker in question, and the design of the 5.12 meant that the whole carrier/locker sits further over (meaning more clearance by quite a notable amount, my memory thinks in the vicinity of 10mm).

Hmm i remember talking to Joeblow about the RD208's when they first came out and he had the prototype in the yellow thing and that's running 5.12's so maybe it was built around that :?

Sounds plausible. At the least it would make sense to me if the 208 was designed as a Vitara front diff lock, and Sierra is a mere after thought... :?

Only excuse to sell something that doesn't really fit, though why not still market the RD88 for Sierra, or take 3mm off the flange area?
Now that ARB "ground" the area of the crownwheel side bearing cap on Lance's one I wonder what they did about clearance of the bolt heads.

Pretty confident RD88 is out of production..... I know a few people have been complaining about availability of some parts for them anyway......
Doesn't fit... yeah well, solution was more drastic than fitting a Jimny locker to an LJ

Was sort of hoping either Lance or Brad had a picture of it post grind???

Yeah i didn't think they would build it around just one ratio, have you heard of them having clearance issues before or is this news to you?

It may only be a problem for 3.9 gears?

Everything else the same, I'd say a 3.7 would have actually hit in that centre...

Without measuring, yea, you'd think the pinion would be bigger in a 3.7. Only reason those 3.9s weren't hitting was the backlash was too tight. :?

The new style air lockers don't like crash engaging so bear that in mind too, I know a few people that have had to replace bits but the old style has been used the same
way for years without problems.

What's crash engaging? turning them on whilst the car is driving/moving?

Yeah. Which ARB has always said not to do anyway. Common sense to me..
