hi

i just brought a new LWB sierra (87) 1.3L nt sierra MANUAL. the plans are to put my WT diffs under it, 32" tyres, 2 inch spring lift, RUF. when i picked it up yesterday it came with a heap of spares including a Jap auto trans for a sierra (auto gear box,sierra auto trans tunnel cut from a jap sierra, steering coloum to suit the auto with no clutch pedal)

Now my question is what would be the best gearbox to go with? pros and cons
the car will mostly be used for camping and 4x4ing so i will want it to be able to cruise at 110kpm.

i also have the option of putting in a 1.3L sierra motor with a turbo on it?????

i look forward to getting some feed back from the auszooker guru's

the only thing I will add to this is although my new car (auto) is more capable than the last its less fun to drive.

pretty sure that auto will be useless. Colud be wrong .

The only autos I know off in jap spec were 660cc ones so that may not bolt up to anything but a f series motor. We will need pics of the bits to clarify. Also it might be a 3 speed which would make it like driving a standard car in 4th so at 110 kph it would be screaming its nuts off.

more pics on what you have first would make it easier for us to help you.

I do think there was a 1.3 auto available in a sierra in Japan. I also understand it was a three speed auto, and that's going to make it a big challenge to gear your car effectively for both on and off road use with a 32" tyre.

I'd also be interested to know whose auto it is. Vitaras run a trimatic, which are tough, but I'd be surprised if that's what was used in the Sierra. I'd imagine it's somehting smaller/lighter, and it might be a bit of a problem if it gives you any trouble.

I've had a hand in a couple of three speed auto (trimatic) sierras, but they're both running a 35" tyre, and highway revs are still fairly high.

Auto's are superior for difficult terrain, no question, but that's pretty irrelevant if you can't drive the car on the highway to get there.

Correct on all accounts.

Years ago Matt and I made a truggy with a G13BA MPFI auto, jap import coily front cut. It was essentially a G13BB motor, and ran a TINY 3 speed auto. I don't recall exactly what ratios we ran, but I think it was a 5.14 transfer, 3.9's???? and 31's. It revved at 5K on the highway, but was so much fun to drive off-road.
