I am currently in the process of getting my Jimny engineered. So far everything has passed but I have been told that I will need to pass a lane change test in order to complete the process.

If you are not familiar with a lane change test then have a read of ISO 3888-1:1999 (which can be found here http://www.scribd.com/doc/90279739/BS-I ... ane-Change) or watch this video of Alien taking the same test.

While I don't think I will have any difficulty passing the test i am looking for some tips to make sure that I have the best chance possible.

It's the little things like removing the roof racks (to keep the center of gravity down) that I'm thinking of here. Would it be worth running slightly higher tyre pressures for the test?

- Tim.

Make the tyre pressure about 40 psi, put the sway bar back on, and nice stiff shocks

Thanks for that TZAR.

So high tyre pressures it is.

The sway bar is still on the car and it has a tough dog lift so it's certainly got stiff shocks in it.

I don't get to drive it during the test. I have to hand it over to the qualified tester to drive it.

The main thing is the 1.8L conversion, but it is also getting the lift, tyres and wheels signed off at the same time.

It's the lift that has created the need to do the lane change test but I couldn't get the engineer to certify the engine conversion alone, he had to certify the whole car and that meant going through all this.

i ran 40psi in the tyres and nothing else...

you have the option of using sandbags in the passengers footwell to simulate a passenger, and you're allowed to add weight to the back as well (there is a limit though)... but i figured its not getting driven like that so why add shit thats not necessary?

Also - its not done a 110... its done at the top speed of the car, in my example he could only get up to 100km/hr because of the turn before the straight at barbagallo - he was taking the turn at 80km/hr and accelerating out, and wasnt comfotable doing more than 80 around the corner. (I know right? fucking 80km/hr around a corner!)

I ran Cooper STT tyres - be mindful that you only fail if it hits a cone or lifts a wheel... less traction can actually be better - in my vid above, you dont see it cos my g/f turned the camera away at the end, but on the last cones, the reason everyone went "ahhh!" was cos it slid sideways on the last bit rather than lifting a wheel =) Obviously running a high pressure would have helped there too.

mine was running 190mm of lift and 15x7 -15 rims for that test... its now wider (15x7 -38mm) and lower by about 40mm (flat springs) - i have no doubt it'd pass the test again right now if i took it for another pass. To quote my engineer on the day "it handles like its on rails"...

why would they attempt it at the top speed of the car?? considering in some cars the top speed would be illegal to drive on the roads. I understand say doing it at 100 or 110. but anything higher is pointless as you shouldn't be driving at those speeds anyway. let alone do a lane change

why the really high tyre pressure? :?

the times that I got new tyres, or rotate em or balanced after the service the mechanic put lots of air on them like if it where a big 4wd and it handles like shit... really soft and loose till I get air out to normal pressure....

so why the put even more air into to it for a high speed test?... is not the idea to create more grip in the tyres rather than reduce the footprint?

Thanks for the input Alien. Mine will be tested on an airstrip which is 1.5km long. With the 1.8 that will be plenty long enough to get upto 110km/h+ if the tester wanted to.

190mm of lift! That's huge. That gives me renewed hope that mine will be fine. I'm only running 80mm of lift with 15x7 -13 rims.

190mm of lift includes tyres... that's how they measure it here.

as far as 40psi goes - its to eliminate any movement in the sidewall. It gives less traction too, so the car is more likely to break loose than lift a wheel - whether thats a good thing or not depends on who is driving =)

As far as "top speed" goes - you mis-read what i wrote... i meant that its supposed to be at 110, but if the track or car doesnt allow that then lower is ok...

I'm sticking 5.12 diffs and a 2 stroke motor in the LJ if I ever get it engineered then.

Don't you have quite stiff shocks too Alien?

Yeah theyre pretty firm =) No firmer than what you'd get in a lift kit though... mine rides softer now than it did when i had 2" lift, and the 2" lift rode better than stock.

It passed!

I ran with 38psi and the engineer doing the testing commented that he thought my tyre pressures were a bit low as there was a lot of tyre roll.

I wanted to get some in car footage of the test and asked the engineer if he had any issues with me recording it. He said no to the recording. Should've just done it, he probably wouldn't have noticed the camera anyway.

After the testing was done I got to ride shotgun on one more pass. Its a very tight track and car was sliding around a fair bit but did it easily.
