Hi Folks, This is one for the G16B motor gurus. I'm doing up a G16 motor at present. The original G16A block was found to be cracked and I have replaced it with a G16B block. The G16A motor (at least the 1990 version) has two one-piece main bearing cap stiffeners bolted over the aluminium caps. They are a one-piece prssed steel unit. My question is: Does the G16B motor that has steel main bearing caps have any sort of stiffener bolted to them? Thanks Robert |

I've rebuilt a few G16B's and never seen steel main caps. By 'stiffener' do you mean "Stud Girdle" as fitted to GTi's? |

My G16B had a bearing girdle, so I refitted it to my new donk, which didn't. New donk was a G16A import EFI |

Thanks for your replies folks. Thought I'd post some pics so you can see what I'm talking about The top one shows the steel bearing caps as rebuilt in the G16B block. The middle one is the original G16A with the bearing stiffeners. The bottom one is the original aluminium bearing cap. I need to make sure that I don't need the stiffeners before I attach the sump. |

Put them on, they certainly won't do any harm and may help prevent the dreaded G16 block cracking issue. |

I'd love to zukmeista but they don't fot the G16B caps as they are about 12mm shorter than the g16A caps. I only found that out when I did put them on and found that the conrods now hit the stiffeners. This is why I have asked the question if there is a set of stiffeners on a G16B Cheers and thanks Robert |

Use the G16A bearing caps then? |

My G16B bearing girdle. It transfered to my G16A (EFI) Could be the steel caps that make them not fit. But maybe not needed with steel caps. I have no idea, just surmising.

i think if its if possible to fit the stiffener then go ahead, like it was said above any form of added strength will only be a good thing. |
