Post subject:  Gabriel shocks for coily sierra quick question
I know this topic has been done to death but i could only find info for vitaras and leaf sprung sierras on the forums..

Im upgrading the suspension on my 97 coiler, everyone has been suggesting the gabriel 81340 from the commodore on the rear and the hiace gabriel 81147 on the front but when i went to have a look the 81340s seem to have the threaded top instead of the eyelet..anyone have any experience? Or am i just looking up the wrong stuff..

Also had suggested gabriel 81481 shocks which are evidently from the lowered vn vc commodore for the front as they are supposed to have a smaller compression stroke (therefore not requiring a bumpstop extension)..

Any input would be much appreciated..heres some pics of the sus layout atm..

Commodore goes in front. Hiace goes rear with a leafy.

But a coily has struts in the front.

haha jog on..its only the front sus that gives the grief..

So the hiace 81147 should fit the rear but what are people using for the front that has a strut for the coil?

I'm gonna say you NEED TO CHECK the length of the rear shocks before just getting some crummodore ones that 'might' fit.

Example - When I was new to Suzukis I bought a coily with Ultima lifted rear shocks which were designed for a a leafy. They were sooo long the springs were unrestrained at full travel and I was lucky the springs didn't fall out before I found that I had a problem.

It's okay to have excessive travel on a leafy - the leafs will just droop until they can't go any further and any extra length in the shock won't matter.

You will also need a new rear brake line if you want to get any sort of travel longer than a 40mm lifted shock - example Ultima 30-40mm rear shock is OK (just), but a Pedders 50mm is at least 20mm too long.

As for front struts - you could just get some cheap Ultima ones. They are cheap but OK.

ok fair call..it sounds like it might just be easier to go the ultima set then, which is a shame cos i was looking for a tad more ride comfort...

Its surprising no other strut shock fits in the sierras place...has anyone ever heard of welding a coil strut onto a shock? could be interesting

Not really, it's such a shit design that no one else has used it.

coil over strut shocks are used on a shit load of other cars..its just the fact the front shock towers are so thin on the sierra (and the axel moves backwards) thats the problem...other than that its just hard to believe no other car has something that might fit

Haha not just yet, my coilys done me a crap load more good than to warrant getting rid of it just cos the front sus is a shit design..

Btw having the coil "hang free" wont be such a big deal if its cable tied in place :lol:

If you don't mind the coil hanging free on travel make up some spring retainers and relocation cones

All good until 50kgs of diff break the cable tie then hang off your brake lines...
