Hi,

Where can I get a new clutch fan for my 05 Jimny (stock M13a)?

Engine has been getting prgressively hotter and hotter lately with drives on the open road (trying to maintain 100/110kmh) and when offroading. I use a OBD2 reader and can see the engine temps getting as high as 110 degrees before I shut her off. Easy driving around the city the Jimny is fine with engine temps pretty stable around the 89-94 degree mark (which is where it normally sits).

I'm pretty confident everything else in the cooling system is fine. the fan however spins rather freely no matter what the egine temps are (after pulling over with the temps at 110 degrees and engine shut off, I can freely spin the fan), hence why I want to change it.

Repco/AutoPro can't suply one to me (still waiting for a call back from Repco to 100% confirm), have checked google, ebay, Europarts, Rockauto, and cant seem to find anyone to supply the fan...? Have called Suzuki delaership, but the parts guy said I must provide the chassis number before he can search for it, then hung up on me... So plus the fact that I know they'll want to charge heaps of $$$ for the fan, I'm in no hurry to call them back with the chassis number unless they are my last resort.

Also I've heard of people just replacing the fluid in the (viscous) coupling of the fan. Has anyone done this, what fluid to use and where to get it from?

I'd have a guess that the jimny is a similar set up to the vitara, have a read of this one for a guide to replace the silicone oil viewtopic.php?f=17&t=28644

Vitara fan hubs can be fitted to Sierras,
so may be adaptable to Jimnys?
Vitara ones are available on ebay, from 4wd products.
I suggest a re oiling to see if that is your problem, before buying a new one

I ran a solid fan for a time, to see if it was my issue

Get the silicon from your local toyota parts dealer. I did it this week and it cost me $9.40 for a tube. I'd suggest grabbing two tubes if you want to clean your hub out and then fill it back up.

And yeah I've checked the above link to christover1's walkthrough and I think that'll be what I try first.

Need to get it done asap cos I'm going on a trip up to Kalbarri in 2 weeks. Glad the fan busted now and not on that trip though :)

$9.40!! Which dealership was that? I rang my local Toyota dealer (Wangara) and they want $14.55 each tube/bottle (18ml). I know its only a few $, but it bugs me that everything in WA is always more expensive than other states.

Ballarat Toyota sold me two tubes for $19.10, so $9.55/tube.
Now I feel like I've been ripped off, $9.40 is a bargain

well i paid 13 bucks a tube in Townsville, so harden up.

Just did the job then on my Jim. Wasnt too hard, hardest part was getting the fan in and out of the car. but once you loosen the radiator top bolts, its not too bad. had a pretty low level of oil in there, time will tell how it goes. I rounded off one of the countersunk phillips screws holding the 2 halves together, had to drill it out and replaced all 4 bolts with high tensile allen-key bolts.... much better. recommend doing that!

No probs mate. They are tight as fuck. I used a special ratchet right angle driver to get them out that i used to use on aircraft. and even then i burred one. not often i have that drama with this tool.

They are just M6 countersunk though, so easy as piss to replace and I recommend doing so, even if you succeed getting em all out without stuffing it!

The other option is a new fan clutch, I have found the cheapest place is either rock auto in the states or amazon.com. Shipping from amazon is about $12 i think and the clutch itself is around the $64 mark, half what they are here

Yeah, I pretty much buy everything from the states. It's just so much cheaper I'd buy Aussie made where I can but not when stuff overseas is so much cheaper.

I usually stick to known sellers, here or overseas.
But at that price, I can learn amazon.

Thanks all for your comments and this forum!

Got it all back together and the fan seems to be doing its job :)

Drove it up and down the freeway at 110kmh and the temps are stable and cool. Seems to drag on the engine a bit more though so I can hear the fan a bit now when driving at normal temps and have made the engine bit less responsive unfortunately, but at least it should stay cool when the motor is loaded up for long periods!

Also I found a impact driver helped get the 'soft' screws out without damage.

Notes/tips when doing this on a Jimny (and not planning to remove anything but the fan):
1. Removing radiator tops bolts are a must
2. Undo the fan shroud, and rotate it anticlockwise approx 45 degrees to allow far easier access to the fan-to-waterpump bolts from the left of the fan/radiator - will need to unbolt the power steering reservoir from the right of the radiator support (x2 bolts), and will need to get forceful with the shroud to flex it past the lower righthand side radiator support that runs back towards the engine (but it doable).
3. Once fan is undone, lift it and the fan shroud up as high as possible with the radiator pulled as forward as possible (not top bolts must be undone) and then the fan can be slid up between the radiator and fan shroud (very tight but a bit of juggling gets it out)
4. If you've emptied and clean all the old fluid out like I did, then I found that 1.5 bottle of Toyota's fluid/silicone filled the Jimny fan hub to the top.
5. Be careful not damage any of the fins on the radiator core (very delicate)

Using my OBD2 reader and checking the coolant temps live, it now sits between 87-91 degrees in normal city driving, when at constant high speed (110kmh which requires high engine load to maintain speed due to small engine size) the temps sit between 89-94 degrees.
