I have a LWB chassy/body that I got from Stekky a while back. It's dark blue, I think it came from the Sunshine Coast.

Anyway it's got a couple of blue plates on it, I think they are for 1600 conversion and 2 seater conversion. The body is pretty knackered and I will most likely rebody it. My question is, are the plates transferrable in this situation? The chassis is solid, the body is just a bit too far gone to be repaired. I'm not starting the build at the moment, but I want to make some room and if there is no way I can transfer these plates i'm just going to take the body to the metal recyclers.

No I haven't called Queensland Transport yet. But have you ever dealt with them? I will be on the phone for an hour and a half and end up dumber than I am now

It'll have a vin number. So you would have to swap over all the plates from the old body onto the new body as long as it's the same body as the original. I could be wrong but I would think blue plate would match the same vin number as the body plates.

Is it legal to swap VIN numbers between bodies? I seriously doubt it.

I found out the gee-oh.

You fill in the standard light vehicle modification form (which can be found here) and send it into Qld Transport for approval. If they approve the change they will give you permission to move the blue plate from the old body to the new body. Take note that you cannot remove the blue plate without permission, it's as bad as removing a compliance plate.

Yep, you're right it might never be noticed. I'd rather not take the risk.

You would also probably need a surrogate VIN which is a real PITA to get

It's just far too hard to do the right thing with DOT, easier to just swap all the plates onto the new body without saying a word. Good on you for going about it the right way tho

This is the way to go, DOT have been over one of mine and couldn't tell the difference. There is no actual markings on the body to indicate what vehicle it came off, as long as the color on the plate matched the body(or had been changed through QT)...

Is it an issue if the chassis no. and compliance plate no. are different? Which one does the modplate belong to?

The blue plates are matched to the vin. Is the vin on the chassis or body? Normally it's the chassis. All the cars I've had with a separate chassis and body, the number has always been on the chassis only.

make sure when you swap it over to use rivets of the same age, new ones are a dead giveaway if they have been swapped

^^ they were removed for painting, and then reattached

VIN on chassis is stamped, vin on body is riveted (makes you kinda feel that one is permanent, one is transferable).
