Post subject:  loud transfer case
just fitted some 6.5:1 transfer gears and was wondering should it be rather loud not only when in low range but aso when in high range. for example when i am doing 60 in fifth there is a constant whining noise from the transfer case?? is this normal?? no ginding just whining?? cheers

case needs to be shimmed up properly. doesnt matter how well the job was done if it wasnt shimmed up properly then its gonna whine.

by shimming it properly do you mean putting the new shims in that come with the kit or actually machining the shim face or something?

The shims are there to take up machining tolerances in the transfer case housing, and are installed at one end of a shaft between the bearing and the housing.

As far as I know the shims are only available as a genuine item, and you will need to pull your case apart to install them. Here are a couple of threads that have covered this already, here and here.

FYI, I have shimmed my case when I rebuilt it and I have a similar whine. I am running 6.1:1 Rockhopper gears (Series 3 I think they are). I think the noise is getting a little better with time, or perhaps it's just causing me to go a bit more deaf :lol:

my trail gear 6.5's were quite whiney when new particularly in low4,
I removed the transfer and took it back to my mate (a gearbox rebuilder) that had done it for me and pulled it apart and we both checked the shimming and housing to gear clearancing, all checked out ok.I re installed case and filled with 90/140w gear oil and pretended the noise wasn't there.That was about 1800 km of 4wding ago (I don't use vehicle on the road) now nearly all the gear noise has gone .
I changed the oils the other day and it had a fairly metalic type look to it (no large metal pieces).My thought is perhaps these gear bed in somewhat and may become quieter.
A friend of mine installed same gears the other week (mechanic by trade and fussy as the come)rang me up and asked are they supposed to be so noisey??

My only advice is if you know they have been installed properly is maybe give it a little time to bed in. And remember 6.5 is a largereduction some some gear noise is unavoidable

I'm due for an oil change in mine. I ran 80/90 in it for starters, I might give some of that 90/140 a go!!!

I'm due for an oil change in mine. I ran 80/90 in it for starters, I might give some of that 90/140 a go!!!



[b]I know a bloke that runs straight moreys (you know that stuff that looks like thick honey) in his transfer,he belives it helps with the high shock loads going though the case.I dont know if its that good for lube (its oil I guess )but its been ok for 12mths and his box seems real quiet.

The transfer in my zook had quite alot of slop and would "rattle" when coasting in high range. I used to work for Burson auto parts and we were the state agent for Redline oils. They have a product called "Shock proof gear oil". The one I used was blue/green in colour. This reduced the noise in my case by at least half. Only prob is that it is about $38.00 a litre 8O
still good stuff. As for the moreys oil stabiliser I use that in the front lockrite in my landcruiser. I used 1l of moreys to 2l of 85/140 gear oil. You cannot even hear a click from the locker unless you are nose down, off camber and turning a corner under heavy load. Cant see why it would not work as well in the transfer. Powertrax actually recomend in a large diff to use straight "Moreys" oil stabiliser so you will not have to worry about its lubrication qualitys.

thanks heaps fellas for your comments. i assumed it was a normal noise but just wanted to double check.. i will leave it for a while and see if the noise dims at all otherwise i will try some heavier weight oil. cheers again jamie

I picked up some 85w/140 today, Castrol stuff, was about $40 for 4 litres.

I'll let you know how it goes.

cheers damo i was just curious about that viscosity being to thick for the likes of those gears spinning so fast?? but it seems to work for others so?? let us know that would be good!
