Hey all I must be the world crapest searcher or something! Have found many people say just search there is a tone of Info on 4k swaps but I just can't find any.. I'm after Info on the sump and oil intake, I assume mine is still all 4k gear and it's been smashed by the diff and cracked the oil pick up.. And what people have done to put a snorkel on this engine as the setup on mine is just.. Poop.. Hope to hear from some that have been there or in the know |

For being a Russian Spy Hey mate, Mine used to have a 4k-c in it, no bullshit was the best day for my zook when I took it out and put the 1ltr back in. I don't know if the 4k was tired or something was misaligned or what but it was just poo. For what time it was in there though I can remember that the sump did get a little love tap once and mine was mounted really far forward. Bumpstop spacing would probably be the easiest solution to this. I might also have a sump and oil pick up off a 3k (might be the same) if you need a new one. Don't have any suggestions for the snorkel as mine didn't have one. Cheers, Jackson. |

Hang that anchor off the front of a boat and go back to a Suzuki engine. I chased 4k problems endlessly to no avail, put 1.3 Seirra motor in and made 200% improvement instantly. |

A g16b is a much better conversion in an LJ or a Sierra, more power, oil pick up in the right spot, better gear box and best of all the right badge on it. |

kenn wrote: better gear box lots of truth there. Grimbo was the only person I know who was daft/tight enough to take a 1.3 out of a sierra and put in a K motor. At least it was a 5K so it was torquey, but what a bollocks up. The exhaust was a mess as it was hard against the engine mount. It iced its carby if he ran a snorkel, had a mess of inlet ducting to make it work, the transfer had to be slid back to make the jackshaft work, and even then it was back to back unis. The gearbox shift quality was atrocious because the lever needed a sharp bend to chear the dash, and that made it all wobbly/bendy. On top of that, it wasn't legal because it didn't meet 1987 emissions. All up, more loss than win. An EFI 7k with an auto behind it from a town ace (?) might be more viable, but EFI or not, it's still an iron push rod motor. Steve. |

When K engines were fitted in the early 1980's they were current technology and were still fitted to new Corollas. Some of those early conversions in LJ's and 1Litre Sierras were very well done, most were not. When you think about it back in the day they were fitting the latest model engine available, its bad enough that today we are fitting 15 year old G16b engines you just wouldn't go back another 10 years and fit a K. K engines were never big in rallying, any competitive early Corolla rally car ran a T series engine |

K engines were never big in rallying, any competitive early Corolla rally car ran a T series engine It's like Red/Blue/Black motors into Series Landies really, most were done dodgy with a wrecker/tip spec cheapy engine and an oxy, some were done well with decent engines and appropriate driveline changes/upgrades. For the most part they were (relatively) current motors and current vehicles and an easy way to get more power for less/not much more than rebuilding the 2.25, or in the case of LJ50s, replacing/rebuilding a dead 2 stroke. Though to bring it back into perceptive a bit, LJs/1ls were pretty much current cars then and you were sticking current motors into them. Now Sierras are 15+ years old and we're sticking engines equally old into them, plus taking the motor out of (say) a wrecked 2005 Hyundai/Corolla/Lancer ect and putting into a Jimny is no where near as easy to do or get approved as pulling the engine and gearbox from a 197x Dastun/Corolla and putting it in an LJ back in the early 80s. Just an interesting aside, I picked up a copy of Overlander magazine from April 1982 and in it was an advertisement from "Super Suzy Conversions" advertising Corolla conversion kits, disc brake kits (front and rear), auto gearbox kits (for the Corolla motor), 11.5 gallon fuel tanks and high ratio transfer gears, all for LJs. |

Dave Sutchbury, who ran super suzi conversions was a very early member of the Vic Suzuki club. |

Yeah sideways good point about sierras not being current model like LJ's were when those conversions were done. Hillbilly as far as I know we never got an efi 4k only an efi 7k in a van, also even in the vans they are a slant engine, if you sit it up straight your gearbox will gear slant and gearshift will angle toward driver side. |

I believe the 4k-e came out of a starlet or jap spec Corolla's. Not as common as the 7K EFI units though |

Yeah anDy86, I didn't say they don't exist, I said we didn't get them in Australia, wiki says California got an injected 4K. |

The main problems were gearbox length and the LJ rear mounted steering box is in the way of the bellhousing, if yours has power steer it must be running a vitara or jimny front mount steering box |

i know 7k-e motors were still being used brand new in 2008 (dunno with manual i only saw autos) though that is the made in indonesia toyotas that go to indonesia, malaysia, thailand etc. dunno if there would be anyway to import a halfcut or anything though, obviously a whole car is out of the question |

Theres probably a good reason that they are only in those countries and didnt come to Australia. Probably dont meet emmisions laws or something silly. |

Third world countries still want basic, simple, old engines that can be easily maintained and will just about run on kero. |

2stroker wrote: Third world countries still want basic, simple, old engines that can be easily maintained and will just about run on kero. Maybe. Maybe it's also that third world countries have stuff all emissions controls and can only afford cheap cars so manufacturers offload outdated, polluting engines, and basic designs with stuff all crash protection that aren't legal anywhere else. Manufacturers are in the car business to make money. It's only legislation that's leading to the increased safety and pollution controls on modern cars, manufacturers don't engineer this stuff for fun. (maybe except Benz Before the introduction of unleaded in Australia, there were a range of cars for sale that had engines that dated from pre or immediately post WWII. These days, we're seeing new engine designs turned over in each model cycle - 6 years. Think about the 350 Chev - it ran 1955 to 1997, and the next generation ran 1997 to 2013 - The LS engine is all new next year, with direct injection. THake this as example of how legislation is driving expensive engineering changes. The period between starting the engine and the cars emissions being assessed has been dropping. It was 30 seconds, (I think) it's now from turning the key. That's a MASSIVE engineering headache, and that means lots of $$ need to be spent engineering it. Also take into account that manufacturers must take responsibility for the emissions of their engine for 160,000km - it still has to pass emissions at what's considered the end of the vehicles useful life. Steve. |
