You don't run diesel oil because its thicker...... Its not. Well.. it; like petrol oils; is available in different viscosities. You run diesel oil because it has more detergents in it. This will remove carbon build ups ( slowly ). The downside is, that if your motor is old and grubby on the inside, the carbon deposits may actually be stopping it from leaking. The diesel oil MAY cause oil leaks after some time, as it will remove the coking and carbon build up from the motor. Having said that, I only run diesel grade oils in my suzuki's. |

"Diesel" engine oil is not exclusively for diesel engines. There are two important specs you should check when picking an engine oil. Viscosity is an important one, as too thin can cause engine wear while too thick can cause drag and loss of power. Go with an oil close to what's recommended in the FSM or Owner's manual. The other important spec is Grade. Diesel grade are classified like CF, CG, CH etc, while Petrol grades are SG, SH, SL, etc. To remember which is which, "C" stands for Compression Ignition, "S" stands for Spark Ignition, and as the letters go up alphabetically, the later the specification. Typical Diesel oils such as Shell Rimula X are the right viscosity, but are only graded CH-4 and does not have a petrol grading. It should NOT be used in a petrol engine. Other types of diesel oils, such as Penrite HPR Diesel 5 or 15 are rated CI-1 AND SL. They can be used in a Petrol engine. Ensure any Diesel oil you're looking at has an "S.." grading. |

Castrol Tection J Max Castrol Tection HD for tection HD it is ok for use in petrol engine API 'SL' But it says J Max is not suitable for petrol engines. |
