We were discussing this on the weekend and i thought it would make a good discussion. There will be some interesting ideas and thoughts on this one.

With all the other stuff going in this build im a bit stuck for where is best to fix a winch. I dont really want ten ton of winch hanging over the front end, I considered mid mounted but access to the free spool under the tray which will be in there will be a pain. I wondered about the possibility of running a 4000 pound atv winch on the front for lightness. Pics below are of what i have to work with.

what about building a small platform on the front of the bullbar and another on the rear tray... but design it in a way that you can bolt it on and off quickly, so you can "store" it in the back, then quickly bolt to the front when necessary?

I've got an atv winch here you can mock fit Darren, keep it for as long as you need it will eventually go on my trailer but I'm in no hurry.

I've got one of the 4000lb ATV winches if you want any real world measurements. For a winch they're bloody light, 8.6kgs IIRC.

I haven't fitted it yet so I don't know how it goes. I need a to fab up a bullbar.

I saw an interesting set up on a 70 series the other day. It had a normal front mount winch with a snatch block mounted to the bottom on the bullbar, the wire ran under the car to another snatch block mounted on the back of the chassis, both the snatch blocks could be unbolted so you can run a double line pull on the front and you have the option of single or double line pull from the rear.

Basically, a rear/mid mount winch in reverse.

It was pretty crudely done with the wire hanging down underneath the car, snatch blocks hanging low in harms way, the rear snatch block acting as a fairlead and no doubt, wire spooling issues. But it would be good for general farm use and beach work.

Not relevant to you but I figure this will be a winch setup thread so yeah. :)

I dunno if being able to winch from the rear is much of a consideration for you but one of those receiver hitch style winch mounts could be the go so you can swap the winch back to front, though one of those would a royal pain to use and you've got to have a plug system for the wiring. That setup would probably be just as heavy as having a 4000lb back and front but it would be the ultimate in universality. EDIT, Alien beat me, sorta.

I reckon a 4000lb would get you out of anything, though they only have 12m of rope so double line pulls(let alone triple) over any distance would be frustrating but you rarely need to go further and a metre or 2 anyway. You certainly wouldn't want to be doing winch drag raving Victorian style either! :P

whats to stop you from having a second length of rope in a toolbox on the back with a winch hook on both ends? if you needed to winch from a greater distance away to reach an anchor point you could pull it out. hook it up and off you go. i cant imagine needing to winch more than 14m at a time

Nothing at all, that's what I aim to do with mine. :) My point was that you can't winch very far, lets say you wanna leave a metre on the drum and you've got a double line pull going, you've only got 5m or so before you have to stop and re rig. 5m is enough to get you out of most stuff though.

Generally called a winch extension strap :).

That red runva winch is shorter/thinner than a normal low mount but the other dimensions are the same, so it will still stick out just as far.

Have you thought about a mid/rear winch with the cable going through the car to a block at the front if your really opposed to one on the front?

Someone was telling me the other day he had seen one mid mounted and using a windscreen wiper motor to activate the free spool, that or you could go air spool.

IM thinking that if i cut the top bar of my front bar. remove the control box from the top and place it under the bonnet i should be able to get a cradle in under the grill,

that way i can push it bac a fair way.

my steering box will be the main issue on this.

Just spoke to a supplier who can get runva to build a hybrid winch for me,
with the smaller drum but with the larger motor and higher gear set.
means i can have 5.6 meters per minute line speed at 4000 lbs (thats faster than a standard warn himount)
in a winch that weighs around 26-27 kilos. not to bad for price either. hmmmm

Get a avanger winch
They have air free spool avaliable but i found it is faster to wind it out then it was to pull
It would be the quickest stock lowmount ive seen
Mout it facing the back
Get a pully block and weld it in the back bar then run a pipe right down to the front
That way u just hock it on the front hook and pull it double lined out the back to recover trolls
The 9.5 has a 5hp motor
If they can put the 6hp motor off the 12000 it would be super fast

How well does winch rope handle heat?
with a mid/rear mount winch can you run the rope thru pipe close to exhausts, extractors and radiators or will it just melt?

at 4000 lbs which is where mine is most likely to be pulling most of the time the winch runva is 5.6 mpm the fastest avenger is 5.2
at no load, the runva is 15.3mpm, the avenger is 10mpm
at 9500 the runva is 2.7 mpm, but the avenger is down to 2mpm at 9000.

this coupled with the fact that i can get the smaller drum which will help with packaging on the vehicle, and the runva custom is the way i will go i think.

I wonder is the air freespool from the avenger could be mad to work with other winches though

Depending on how much a custom winch is 5.6 at 4000lbs still isn't that quick, it's only a small winch so hopefully they aren't stinging you too much
Anything over $2000 and I'd be looking at a custom warn mid mounted with seamless as fatzook said

anything anywhere near $2000 and i wouldnt be bothering with a winch any way!!!! im looking at half of that!!!!!

im not looking at ever doing winch challenges so a super fast winch isnt on my list of needs or wants. but a small, slick useful winch will be an asset.

Fair enough, that sounds like a pretty good deal then. Custom stuff generally brings big figures but it sounds like you have found a good combination.

No load the kingone is 17mpm. Not 10
but looks slower under. No load because of the small 5hp .motor
Thats y i was saying if theycould.do.the 9.5 with the 6hp itwould. Be real fast
