G'day - Through my various searched I have amassed some info regarding my diff, which I believe is 5.12.

To get a 5.12 ratio in a sierra requires 5.12 side gears from a vitara front diff, correct? Any model in particular?

Will a Sierra lockrite work with 5.12 diffs?

I get a clunking sound from the diff when I reverse at times, and sometimes moving forwards, what would you say is damaged? Don't say the diff...

Thanks Y'all!

with vitara front 5.1's they are the same id and bolt pattern as sierra 3.9's and 3.7's. so to get a lockwrong into it you would use a 4 pinion carrier from an early 1.3 sierra.

So it is possible to put in a complete vit centre, not just change side gears?

I sorta want to know what I have before I pull it apart, and have a spare ready in case I do find chunks missing...

sorry to butt in on your tread

Joe can you just fit the ring gear into the sierra nt diff or do you need the pinion gear as well?

Also is only the front ring and pinion from the vitara compatable?

thanks andrew

the rear vit is physically larger, so won't fit.

You need both mate..Otherwise a (your?)3.9 pinion will chew the 5.12 ring 8O

i had 5:12s in my old soft top zook and thought it was pretty good gearing.Just used two front diffs as obviously rear just wont fit  i done it the stupid way and just bolted in the complete centres alloy housing and all, allthough it held up on my zook a mate tore the alloy to bits and ran it up through his tray with his tailshaft. So id go about putting the ring and pinion in the sierra centre and probly go a 4 pin up front while im at it,which you would need for a front locker anyway.

ajsr you need to change both,im pretty sure both ring are 41 tooth but the pinion is different,8 & 11???????? and the spacings between gears are different so no it wouldnt work mate

you don't need a 4 pin carrier to fit a lockright.
they make a lockright for both 2 and 4 pin diffs, i have one in my
front diff which is a 2 pin center.

So a lockrite will fit both carriers then?

the lockright that comes without coupler will fit both types of diff
the one with coupler is for 4pin. actually the big thing is that the coupler only fits the spline of the rear axel.

the lockright with coupler is the better locker and a coupler cant be added to the one without.

so what is the best way to do this?

1. Put the whole vitara diff centre into a sierra housing?

2. Put the vitara ring and pinion into the sierra diff centre?

What type of diff do i need for this to be compatible? (2 or 4 pin)?

Can an airlocker be put into either diff?

How many pins are standard WT diffs?

Although the rear Vit HOUSING is physically larger, the F and R Ring and Pinions are identical, except for the GV which has a larger R&P in the rear. Using a rear Vit centre with the ring still attached and transferring that and the pinion into a Sierra is the way to get a 4 spider centre with 26 splines. If you want a 4 spider centre for the front, the 22 spline side gears from a 2 spider front centre will drop into the 4 spider housing.

ummmm.....are you serious?

rear vit ring and pinion will not fit a sierra carrier. if you want 26 spline 4 pinion diff then just bolt you're existing carrier on to the vitara front ring gear......and all lockers will work too!

p.s.........gv (not xl7) ring gear diameters are the same as early vit ring gears.........the only dofference is that grands have a smaller internal diameter.

that was a good one...............
