Post subject:  Fabbing up a half cage??
Hey guys!

Was just thinking of fabbing up a half cage for my soft top vitara (fibreglass top fitted)..Im thinking the standard sorta hoop over the head from pillar to pillar and then two supports going back...

What type of tube would i need for this? I only have a cheap bender that can bend upto two inches in diametre..Its not going to be for competition use or anything, just for a little bit more protection if anything was to ever happen..has to be stronger than the standard hoop above my head made from sheet metal right? :| lol

So what do ya rekon guys?

Something with a decent wall thickness that ur bender can bend nicely, u tried bending 90 degrees with it? I know cheap benders n pipe don't go so well!

yeah mate i have, if the wall thickness is good it goes alright..

Im gonna go for some seamless mild steel 2.6mm thick.

Biggest thing for good bends is matched tube and die size, and a nice smooth die

a cros brace will make it heaps stronger

Shakes, I agree. Although if someone's silly enough not to consider that in the design stage then maybe they deserve a good knock on the head.

I still want to be able to put my front seats all the way down, no rear seats are fitted. What's people's thoughts on a removable cross brace?

Pete's photos show special weld on fittings that are solid and semi-cylindrical that are together with the bolt.

are there caps for those tube joiners for when the brace is removed, as they look very ouchy, sharp & kind of close to rusho's head?

can those joiners be purchased from some where?

Would be interesting to see if side intrusion bars could be put in with them

I think door bars and removable elements to gain access for engine removal are the normal uses of those couplers.

they do too!. really should have known that. how do they go with being chromo and welding these up to CDS?

Dont think I'll be making one guys... found some scrap 32nb gal tube.. 2.6mm thick.. cheap bender kinked it bad..I cant afford a good bender either so it'll have to stay cageless for now!

Fin some one to bend up the tube to your specs.

I got a local shop to bend mine up for $10 per bend

According to google its best being TIG'd using the appropriate filler.

TIG'd using 4xxx filler. Welded nicely to the 350_CDS. They are similar metals, so why would there be an issue?

Both caps and clamps were machined here. I'll be selling them in the new year.
