| Post subject: | Sierra gearbox noise? Meant to be going to QLD... |
Hi guys, Just this week I noticed a noise that has always been in the car suddenly become louder. Took it to my mechanic who road tested it. He said it sounds like a bearing or possibly a broken gear in the gearbox. This would make sense to some extent - the noise was always there, and now after replacing the really thick, really black gear oil with fresh stuff, it is suddenly louder. But, does this mean my gearbox is about to go? Mechanic seems to think it'd be pretty risky attempting to drive to QLD and back on it... So, does anyone know a manual gearbox specialist in Sydney that could help diagnose it? Does anyone have a gearbox that's in good nick that they'd be willing to part with? Are Swift/Vitara boxes compatible? Cheers, KD. |

Swift gearbox is definitely out, FWD! Vitara won't fit without mods. |

Check the rear wheel bearings. When they are stuffed it can sound like a gearbox issue? |

Good thought Shep. Unfortunately I don't think it could be that simple though - just did the wheel bearings about 3 weeks ago. |

I bet you are now wishing that you did more regular planned maintenance to your vehicle. Neither Swift nor Vitara gearboxes are any good as Sierra replacement. |

| Post subject: | Not the gearbox - it's the transfer case. Anyone want to sel |
Took the Sierra to a Gearbox/Diff specialist this arvo. Within about 10 seconds of driving he said "It's not your gearbox. It's your transfer case." So - does anyone near Sydney have a transfer case they'd be willing to part with? Or know where I could get one? Cheers, KD. |

Before spashing cash, consider borrowing a good xfer and test that. They are quite easy to remove and install. |

| Post subject: | NT transfer ratios same as WT? |
Ok I've managed to find a NT transfer. I've been told the flanges are different, which is ok, as I can swap the flanges over from my buggered WT transfer. But are the ratios the same or are they different? Cheers, KD. |

Same. Only 1L and coily transfers are different to 1.3 leafy cases. |
