What are the cam timing marks? Nothing seems to line up properly and I would rather have everything pointing in the right direction so I can Mark the dizzy pulleys

if in doubt, make your own marks with a paint marker.

I always do this, even when the marks are obvious. Just make sure the marks you put on the pulleys are a bit more permanent (scratches or similar)

Hey Shep. Those aren't stock cam gears. What is the chance they have been butchered as part of that distributor creation on the passenger side?
Typically you'd have the intake/exhaust slot marked with an I and E respectively. This goes into the pin on the cam.
The timing mark recessed on the gear lines up with the ridges on the tapped cover at 12oclock. The crank keyway also lines up with it's mark at 12oclock.

If those gears are modified though, all of the above is null and void. You'd need to find TDC and create your own mark from there.

They are Vernier adjustable cam gears... Someone has spent some $$ in that motor.

Shore have, the head looks awesome. Cant wait to get it back together and plug the nitrious in.

Do GTI motors normally have head bolts? The studs don't look stock.

Maybe you could use the end of another one and get it welded to that one? Probably easiest way I would think?

The bolt positions on those cams would suit being adjustable, it would be a very small range if they are though. On mine the adjuster slots are ~20mm long.
Are the cams standard?

GTI's use head bolts with a 8mm hex from memory. Studs are available from ARP that use 12 point, 12mm nuts, not sure about other manufacturers.

WTF is the thermostat housing a cut and shunt job?

Must be a stud and nut kit. Cam looks to be a lumpy little thing.

Dunno what the thermostat is , all I know is it isn't going to last for long so I will be on the lookout for a new one. Sierra one has different bolt spacing.

Some g13ba Swifts from the 90s have the thermostat housing you need.
Those cams look the same as mine.

i doubt that there is a pre 2000 swift within 200km of me :( certainly none in any wrecking yards anyway

it is back together and going :D i slapped a bottle of no3 permatex over it and it isnt leaking so will see if i can source a new one.

are these rice motors normally hard to blead the cooling system?

A perfect thermostat housing is from a Barina

Also, make sure you get the GTi thermostat as the generic ones make the engine run hotter and they're not that great
The GTi one is alot longer

Suzuki Swift SA310 (G10)thermostat housing -. M16 fine thread bolt cut down to fit and block the factory thermo switch hole

this is what I used . but my termo switch for the radiator fan was mounted near the radiator.

have a troll through suzistores online catalog . most suzukis of that era used a similar thermostat size . it's just a mater on finding one that points in the right direction for your water plumbing .

also just so you are aware while searching for info in build treads etc, The cap bolt arrangement on the Mk2/3 is 90 deg different to the Mk1 ,
