| Post subject: | Jimny Roof Console |
Hey Guys, I've been trying to find more space for the jim, just for the little things and have been thinking that some kind of roof console / shelf would be a good idea. has anyone done something like this? i started taking the sunvisors and interior light apart, i think i want to leave the interior light how it is and build around it ( 2 much like hard work to move it ) with the the shelf being screwed into the 2 sunvisor threads on the far corners of the cabin with some longer bolts. then a lip on the front to stop stuff sliding onto my head. my concerns are: 1 - will it sag in the middle, what would be the best wood to use? ply of somekind i presume but im no chippy so some kind of advice would be good. any other advice around strengthing it? 2- will i get enough room out of it? i guess the aim is for it jsut carrying some map books, sunnies or a point and shoot camera maybe and i think the style of the jimny roof should work with that. does anyone have some rando ideas that would also be a good idea to get that little bit of extra room in the jim. i thought about a shelfy type thing between the 2 rear grab handles but that might interfere day to day with rear vision. any suggestions would be appreciated. |

best bet would be to make a fiberglass one and do a mould off it and sell them = easy money |

I agree, I am thinking of an additional console on top of the dash for more instruments and make like a speaker container across the back roof to house speakers and other various objects out of fibreglass |

In addition to the dash mat hole thing. Consider a behind the seat storage bag. I got one and it holds HEAPS of shit. Maps, chargers, sunnies, camera. You name it, and doesn't stick out much at all. 5 bucks on eBay. Here's mine when I bought it (empty)

how do you make up the board to match the contour of the roof? im a wood working retard so i can only assume you use a peice of cardboard or the like first? looks good otherwise |

Was thinking to make a rail between the two handles above the doors, but your idea is much better. Just make sure to anchor it on all mounting points (handles, sun visors and roof light) - a wooden plank falling while driving would mean at least some pain |

Good effort! I dunno if im 100% on the idea yet. But good ingenuity there, Def's needs a bit of angle-ally screwed in for a lip like you said, i can see maps and phone chargers attacking you in the near future! Can you get some close ups of the attaching method you are using before you get it carpeted up and hide all the secrets? |

i attached at the grab handles and at the interior light. the interior light is a biatch, where it mounts its has washery type things that move on the light so it cant mount flushish. ( had to make a little backing wood for the light... alot of cutting out different holes for plastic bits.( no good pics ) tried to attach to the sunvisor holes on the far sides but it is 2 hard. ![]() ![]()

Neat! heres an idea for ya. Now that the interior light wires are exposed. Splice into it, and run a white LED strip on the edge of the shelf just behind the lip you will eventually put in. Then when you open the door the whole roof would light up and glow and look pretty sweet. would also make a nice way of seeing in the hidey hole. |
