Hey guys,

Just wondering if a stock Sierra transfer would hold up to a 200hp turbo motor with a gear reduction of around 12.7:1 before the transfer. Would be turning 33" tyres on 4.1:1 ratio diffs. Whole rig would be around 700kg. Aimed at rocks and trails.

I've heard they may blow up, is a wrap around ring the cure or is it destined to become shrapnel.

Cheers.

Lets just say that's WELL beyond the design perameters of the sierra transfer case, mounts, driveshafts and diffs.

FYI - stock sierra's produced 63hp on a good day... that makes your 200hp over 3 times the power it was designed for =)

brenno's is producing a bit less that that.. (Ca18det) and it holding up pretty well in the transfer case department.
rocktoy ring helps a bunch!
he is destroying leafsprings under power!

Yeah, but carlman wants to run more than 3 times the factory gearing before the transfer, thus pumping 3x the torque (torque breaks stuff, not HP) into it strait off the bat, add the mega motors torque and that transfer is way out of its depth.

Given you want to drive rock, you'l shatter that transfer into a thousand pieces!

Im guessing your looking at a turbo'd bike motor, using its gearbox as a primary and a sierra box as a range finder behind it...

Am i close?

if you reduce the reduction before the transfer and then run lower diff ratios the torque through the transfer. on the 2010 -> vw transporters with 4-motion have different ratios front to rear but step up the gearing to reduce torque on the tail shaft

I think you will be way too low geared with that sort of reduction in front of the transfer case.

Nah pezz bit off.

Yea I had my doubts, cheers guys.

May have to go for a mq or 720 case.

Possible plan is a Mazda B6t with either auto or manual transaxle (locked) with shaft to a remote case and then out to W/T axles with 33s. Small lightweight single seater tube buggy.

Chromollyed zook diffs up to the task? Trying to go small and nimble...

Why not a suzuki 800cc and auto out of a suzuki hatch... whack it on gas, weld the diff, no tcase required..
Ultra light moony

i always liked mock's fwd celica powered moony
i think it was ra22, auto, welded diff, custom mk diffs

i reckon the rear diff will struggle. Somewhere around here I read that the Hilux diffs are not much heavier than the sierra diffs.

You could look at Gwagensteves hybrid vitara full floater rear setup or you could probably get similar strength out of hiluxc diffs with the option to upgrade to crmos in them.

wondered where i saw that user name before, good to see you're still planning a buggy mate

sounds like you want something like rhetts micro bug off outers and now the new similar one they are building.

1.3 zuk motor, welded auto, zuk diff front,80 rear on one with cromos and bald 33s
new one called garrys buggy on there is same but with hilux diffs i believe

have you seen them? they dont have tcases in them, but only on 33s and with the autos seem to be driveable without a tcase

i had a laser years ago with a b6t with bigger snail, exhaust, microtec computer etc and have thought a few times would be the perfect motor for a micro.
look at sierra jims build with the meteor motor on here?

Post subject:  Re: High HP vs Sierra TC

its on my list to build some thing similar to micro, but i think the no transfer would annoy the crap outta me.

I'd start the build with a really low-power variant that you can lean on, so something like an old single cam Astina 1.6 transaxle. If you find you need more torque you require.

With an auto transaxle, you won't need a transfer as well.

Mock (who very rarely posts on here any more/ever) built the Rodent back in 2007 with a 3S-FE (I think) transaxle from a late 80's camry. the motor was pulled from a mega km junker with absolutely no attention. It ran 37" creeepy crawlers, MQ diffs, and no transfer. It could have done with a little bit more torque, but not all that much. It had mo problem smoking up tyres.

Adding a transfer into the mix- Even a sierra case with stock gearing, in first high youre at 66:1. That's sweet with 33's, but in low, you're down at 104:1 that's too low to be useful in a 700kg buggy. It's too low to be useful in a 1200kg sierra with 35's.

I say build it without the transfer and see how you go. I bet you don't need it.

Steve.

Pezz: allready have an awesome motor mate, I'll build around it ; )

Baker boy ; hey mate

Appsie: cool mate I'll check them out, I do want to have a transfer so it's not "just driveable" more having the option of super low gearing and fast enough to hit the dunes after ; )

I'll check out hilux diffs, are they much wider than zook diffs?, forgive my ignorance I'm a Patrol nut ; )

Post subject:  Re: High HP vs Sierra TC

Cheers Steve, I'll have A search, I just don't want to build it and wish I had more gearing which is something that can't be easily changed with just transaxle.

Maybe a MQ transfer, lux diffs and 35s would be more suited to the gearing?
