Im looking into the possibilities of putting Powersteering into the LJ50
there is no space at all for a traditional powersteering pump on the engine.

A few places around i have seen people have used MR2 pumps which are electric, but these are generally on more modern cars with VSS sensors for feed into the computers for variable pressure control etc.

The LJ50 being a 1975 vehicle has no such sensors obviously.

Does any one have any good ideas as to how to control a pump successfully in such a setup.

When i looked at getting a column mounted one I found an idea that people were using was a twisty knoby thingy. That is the technical term. You just dialled the power up or down as you needed it. Some japanese dude was selling suzuki steering column with the knob already soldered into the factory computer for the steering. It works like a volumne control.

Haven't had a chance to read much on this yet, but would a Vitara style VSS in the speedo head do the job?
I have a few laying around, and might see If I can fit one to an LJ cluster.

You'd have to get the number of pulses correct for it to sense the speed correctly but you may find that it will still work without the VSS as it should have some sort of fail safe operation.

I looked up bmw mini ones and they run at a constant speed all the time aparently.

There are different types of electric power steering, typically column drive, belt drive and Electrically Powered Hydaulic Steering (EPHS). I believe the Mini uses EPHS which is pretty much the same as old fashioned power steering but with an electrically powered pump.

I assume you are refering to the SW20 MR2s, as i dont belive any AW11s had power steering.

So it seems that the powersteering is separate from the ecu, it sounds though that the rack itself has some trick electronics to tell the control module what to do though.

yeah thats what im wanting. simple powersteer, vitara box probably. but the motor will not run a standard hydraullic pump.

So get find out what the standard flow rates are and what pressure you need, get an electric motor that will spin your pump up at that and your done.

actually looks like early 2000s astra pump might be the way to go. aparent doesnt run external variable voltage sensors or anything like that.

you are going to need to get this electricity to power the pump from somewhere, likely the alternator

once its all said and done, the engines still going to have to cough up the same amount of power, either spinning a pump or an alternator to make the power to turn the motor to turn the pump, seems complex for nothing

understood. I will have to upgrade the alternator. Im not trying to avoid putting a manual one on for some wierd notion that its gonna give me more power, im not.

IM looking at the elec version as there is nowhere to fit a manual one on the LJ50 motor

Counter the power loss on the 3 pot with triple injected throttle bodies, power valves and a descent exhaust :D

I don't know about the Mini power sterering unit (it wasn't made here ;-))but usually the motor only takes power when required. The power comes from the battery and the alternator tops up the battery, because the PS isn't continuously required the overall power loss is less than that of a conventional hydraulic pump. If the vehicle is going to be running a winch and uprated battery/charging system then this isn't going to be an issue.

comp car, it will always be steering, with big tyres, low pressure and ill assume a locker

combined with low revs you'll have to what the battery, we had lots of troubles on the pink winch thing killing batteries in night stages from the lights and lots of idling

can you put a pto in the transfer?

If thats the case then I wouldn't bother with electric PS. Has the LJ got an idle up solenoid on the carb that can be wired to the PS switch? that might help a little when the pump loads up.

No idle up on the LJ 50 but I could easily run it at higher idle. If I run a gel battery and a bigger alt will it be ok? I don't do a lot of night stages and day stages are done at big ish revs and don't usually last more than 15 mins

i know the sierra transfer (which is what i run) had PTO options, but ive never seen or heard of any one having one.

I think the anphibious jimmny runs a sierra tc with a pto to drive the jet
They are made in qld somewhere
