I have swb vitara with lift needing tyres. I'm deciding whether to put 31 or 30 on it I want a tyre for only offroad and want something really aggressive, was looking at silver stone mt 117 extreme but they only make them in 31. I need opinions on which size I should take and what tyres are reasonably priced but also extreme |

i have the insa turbo special track in a 235x75r15 is a bees dick bigger than a 31" MTR which are undersized & worn, they are a remold tyre... eg retread, they work well off road, bloody noisy on road & they're heavy as hell, as a play only tyre they're perfect. 235/75r15's v 31/10.5r15   insa talk thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25704&hilit=insa+turbo tyre dribble thread hear for some thoughts & ideas viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31704&hilit=insa+turbo |

are you buying it for looks or for functionality? if you're buying the best mud tyre available then the tread pattern atari suggested is right IMO - available as above or in silvertsone or simex brands... they do however suck in anything other than mud and WILL try to kill you on a cross slope. perhaps you're better to mention the vehicle, tyre size and terrain you plan to drive regularly (including on road if you are driving it on the road) and a better suggestion can be made? |

Where do you live? That will make a difference to what tyre works best. Simex 'pedes are just amazing on slick clay, but in deeper mud they offer little advantage over other tyres and they suck on rock. They're nothing special in summer too. That means for us in Vic you'll look like a superstar on one hill and nothing special on the next. Regardless of size or type, if your looking for an offroad only tyre you nee beadlocks to make them work properly. Steve. |

The other option and its one used alot by the older guys is get a decent quality mud tyre thats about 70/30% mud/road and then get some Mud Chains. Ive seen guys drive things with chains on that just defy belief. |

I live in north Brisbane and want something for most surfaces I'm thinking either mt117 extreme or otherwise treps,federals,km2 something like them and will 31s work on vitara or will 30s be heaps |

In that list only the silverstones are "really aggressive tyres" the others are road tyres that are pretty good offroad. Really aggressive (for me at least) means often bias ply, severe duty tyres like swampers, pedes, silverstone extremes, jt2's various 7.50 16 mine service/military tyres etc. stuff you wouldn't daily on. It's invaluable though to find out what people are using/ what works in your terrain. Steve. |

Im a big fan of 30x9.5 A few reasons, being narrower they sap less power, attract less attension from mr plod and generally have a lower load rating than 31x10.5 I wish they made treps in 33x9.5 |

+1 to the tall skinny tyre theory. the good thing about those insa turbos i posted is they're a smidge over 9" wide & pretty close to being 31" tall |

my 31" KM2's are 9.5" wide tread to tread... contact patch measures just under 9.5 and when at 8psi they're 10.5" wide contact patch. just FYI |

the insa's would be skinnier again if you're measuring contact patch at they're a 235 to start with. |

Im all for tall and skinny. The bad thing about the insa turbos is that they are really heavy (the retreads adds a few KG per wheel). |

the insa weighed just over 34kg mounted on an 11kg steel 15x7 rim so that makes them around 23kgs, a 31" KM2 weighs 21.2kgs... sure it's a bit heavier, but not a massive amount. |

not sure of the actual load rating but they bag alright at virtually zero psi.

I'm running the Federal M/T, i've done rock and sand, but no mud yet, not had a problem in either, aired down to 16 psi in sand and towed my mates broken Jimny from DI point to freshwater road no worries, and they're only around $180 per tyre. |

I've driven GH, Ormeau and LCMP in my old Snow White with Silverstone MT117 Extremes and Simex and I'd recommend you get Treps... Not quite as good in deep mud but much better everywhere else. Stekky had them (31") on his and outdrove me at GH on a big hard packed steep climb out of a waterhole.

Got a quote on kumho mud tyres today. What is better or preferred more kumho or treps and are km2 any good compared to treps |

personally the cum-hoe kl-71's look like they'd bring all the boys to the yard, they just look ghey. i'd be looking at treps if i didn't score a set of km2's at a reasonable price the otherday. |
