I need to replace transfer case output bearing in my vitara, my questions are.
Have many people have replaced these?
How hard it is to do?
Do I need to drop transfer case out to pull back plate off?
What is involved in it?
Is their anything else I should do while it's apart?
Where is the best place for parts?

hey mate,

pretty sure the transfer will have to be removed and fully stripped apart, as far a i know they are not common to fail. It would actually be easier and cheaper to buy a 2nd hand case and just swap them out.

I recently swapped my transfer cases out and fitted one with reduction gears, i had a different speedo gear in the 2nd case and tried to split the back off to get to the gear. found out you can only get to it via the front by stripping it all down.

Thanks for that it will be very useful, I am wanting to take the tailshaft output bearing out which is the side you did undo. Would I still need to pull It all apart

Yeah, you need to pull it out. Much easier to work on a bench than under the car anyway. The front (both actually) output actually comes out of the middle of the three sections:


Transfer comes apart from the front (gearbox end) as shandy said. If you're doing it you might as well buy a rebuild kit and do all the seals and bearings to be safe... or stuff it and just buy another one and swap the lot in would be the easiest way out.

mate, go buy some output seal from suzuki or somewhere else they have genuin ones. dont buy after market seals as they leak. only $51 for 2. same part number for both.

you could also buy a second hand one, repalce the bearings and seals in it, and swap it in.

upside, car isnt off the road thus not as much pressure to rush the job.

downside, additional cost in buying another transfer case.

I'm just going to put it in and then fix up the old transfer with crawler gears aswell, in a while that is
