Pinking or pinging whichever you wish.

My G16a Carb Vitara was leaking around the sump.. fixed that. then last week it had the leak around the oil pump gasket fixed and front main doen at same time. A day before taking it in to get that done the valves started making the noise when under acceleration.
After the gasket was fixed still the issue and slowly got worse over the following days.
I thought OK process of elimination, put 98 fuel in (I usually run 95-98). Still going. Checked for exhaust leaks. No all welds good and fine. Manifold bolts were quite loose so nibbed them up. Nope, still happening.
Put new plugs in. still going.
Checked fuel filter as Bursons didn't have any there. Fuel filter looks clean and fine enough.
Thought OK heads done..... Nope not losing any fluids and not mixing them either.
Not overheating or anything just noisy on acceleration and driving me fkn batty as sounds like a tappy old bitch!!!

Any ideas on what to try next? I've been saving for Mud tyres for months and now I can afford them this week but if I can't figure out this I won't be getting them :(

Thanks Guys- this fkn zook will never be done I don't think :9

Never heard pre-detonation called 'pinking' before.......

Think that's the term poms use.

All of Europe calls it that

So would you say it started after the sump was done? I would say they have put cheap oil in and its eating it, makes em ping really bad and nothing fixes it, cept draining it and putting good oil in

I used to get this Wynns oil conditioner stuff, you could get something G powered that pinged (but was tuned right) and tip it in and go for a drive and it would clear it up in minutes once it all mixed in.

Always used good oil in mine since.

Yes pinking as I'm a kiwi originally lol It seems lifestyle wise NZ follows Britain and Aus follow US.
I came here and they call them 'shifters'. I was like WTF its a crescent, it appears like Hoovering it is based on a brand name for way back when.

OK so sounds like oil's a plan. Never thought about that to be honest, and I know they use thin runny stuff. I'll grab some GTX on the way home tomorrow night and do a change see how it goes.
And yes it was about a week after the sump had been done then started pissing out of the oil pump gasket lol.
I'm always hesitant with additives as once I added some to a racecar fuel tank to help smooth low idle and it rusted out the tank in a matter of 2 weeks :(

Forget the GTX, grab some Penrite HPR10. Repco sell it, you just have to look past all the Castrol stuff

Post subject:  Re: Pinking like a stripper...

OK sounds good. What numbers u recommend>?
I see the HPR 10 and similar have a range of numbers available..
I normally go a thicker oil to prevent high temp 'splattering' off moving parts. Cold doesn't matter much as I ALWAYS run the zook for 5-10mins prior to driving when the engines cold.

That's a great way to carbon up the head.
The best and correct way to warm a motor up is to actually drive the car.

so has the ignition timing actually been checked ? because i see no mention of it.

Post subject:  Re: Pinking like a stripper...

I have no light :(
Put in Penrite 15/40 tonight, they didn't have HPR 10 but 15/40 is same as I used to run with GTX when it was smooth as.
Oil that came out of it was almost as thin as water... fukn ultra tune!
Haven't driven it yet but sounds smoother idling... dontcha love how easy an oil change is.

Post subject:  Re: Pinking like a stripper...

OK so 15min run to work.
It's waaay smoother running and much quieter but it still does it.
It's gunna have to be the timing light and fuel filter change now isn't it.
FFS over these stupid little issues

I know it as pinking also! but I am a kiwi

I would bet its timing, you dont need a timing light, use a marker pen or scratch a across the dizzy and mount near the screw that holds it solid so you have a reference point, then tweak it a little bit at a time, in either direction until its running nice! Is a bit of trial and error and its not hard. I have done it this way with my g13ba and they are very similar engines.

Are you sure were talking about
Pinging/pinking/detonation here and not tappet/rocker noise? Rocker noise is constant on and off the power and at idle.

Pinging will rear its head under acceleration and sound like a bad rattle or 1000 tiny hammers.

Btw as far as your timing goes its always best to adjust with a light. Otherwise you could be well off the mark leading to shithouse combustion or on the other side major detonation. 8 degrees at idle with Vac advance disconnected and plugged.

Post subject:  Re: Pinking like a stripper...

Yea it's under acceleration only, sounds same as usual when Idle.
I def threw out my light dammit and thought Ill just grab a cheapy at supercheap but cheapest is $70. Might have to call ultratune and ask em to do it. problem is they prolly wont do it in 15mins they'll want it a whole day.
8deg at idle really? I thought it was 2deg :O. fkd if I know which is vac advance hose lol

Author:  FullyZooked [ Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:45 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Pinking like a stripper...

$70 you will only spend once.

Yes 8 degrees advance at idle 800-900rpm.

Vac advance is connected to bottom of Dizzy. Remove an plug the vacuum line for an accurate reading at idle.

How does oil cause pinging?

gets past the oil rings and mixes into the fuel air mix, effectivley lowering the octane rating of the fuel

Ah good point, never thought of it like that.

OK well went to repco and supercheap but cheapest they had was $70. called ultra tune and they will have a look Thursday so hopefully that will end it. If not i'll open the top and see if the lifters n valves are ok. But some sticky lifter additive but wont use that unless absolutely have to, hate additives.
On an up note just fitted first mud tyre to test clearance and seems ok so 3 more ordered :)
Thanks for the help guys. Pitty I don't have a timing light or i'd answer that Q straight away.
Let's hope that's the cause

I found that it has to do alot with fuel, I put in E10 in my sierra and it rattles like a tin of marbles, then I put in 98Ron and all goodski's.

This vid explains how, what and why it happens.
