Hey guys does anyone know a way to set the time with the harmonic balancer still on ?

Use the timing marks on the flywheel. Through the timing inspection port on passenger side of bell housing.

I can't seem to find it. I'm probably looking straight at it but I can find it.

Are you talking about lining the marks up or setting the timing with a timing light?

Timing marks for the head and pistons, if that makes sence

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

Does anyone know if for example piston 1 and 4 at top dead lines up the timing marks ?

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

yes, TDC between the bottom pulley and the mark that says TDC on the plastic cover is 1 and 4

I dont have a timing belt cover anymore. . .

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

So if I turn the motor to tdc for pistons one and four then line up the timing marks of the head and put it together it will be timed ?

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

you need to explain what you are doing I think

if you are fitting a belt just pull the balancer off, 5 bolts it only takes 30 seconds

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

I'm putting the head back on the block and I can't line up the the timing marks on the block because the guy who owned it before me welded the harmonic balancer on.

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

welded it to the crank pulley?

so you undo the 5 little bolts the pulley doesnt come off? I would undo the big bolt the middle and just replace the lot then, get rid of the dodgy stuff

Put number 1 piston all the way up and that's top dead centre

Sorry just reread the post above, iv u put the cylinders 1 and 4 up put the head on and line up the cam it will be all set to top dead centre, but not timed.

But If you drop the dizzy in and line the rotor button up to number 1 plug on the dizzy cap, it will fire .
Once its running u loosen the bolt that holds the dizzy in and set the timeing

That's one sure way to make sure it doesn't come loose and flog out the keyway

So one and four at tdc and the gear on the end of the head lined up with its mark and the motor won't eat it self l?

Author:  Scrawny [ Sun Mar 03, 2013 7:44 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

It won't anyway, it's a non-interference motor. It'll be hard to get it on the right tooth on the crank if you can't see the marks

Yeah. Im still trying to figure out how I bent both valves :/

Post subject:  Re: sierra engine timing

When mine was tdc I punched a mark as a reference, but u could mark tdc on the block and and the pulley/harmonic balencer,
Mine is similar also

Does anyone know the location at which the pistons are at when the timing mark behide the harmonic balancer is lined up with the one on the block ?

Should be 1&4 up ,check it mate just in case

Mate shutup will you? This bloke is talking about getting the bottom pulley lined up to put a belt on, 1 tooth either way the thing wont run properly if at all

Bashing around trying to make the piston sit at TDC wont work, its not anywhere near accurate enough, there is some 20 degree of swing in the crank with the piston at tdc, what you are telling him to do is just going to end badly

Now fix the crank pulley, pull it all off and replace it, then you can line the mark on the crank pulley up with the block and be done with it, you can see where the key is with the big bolt removed and you might be able to sight it up, but 1 tooth wrong either way is just going to be a stuff around

My guess is that its already flogged out.

i'd also be worried with how much weld is on the balancer and where, as it could be putting a small amount of umblanace/vibration onto everything, meaning seals and thigns could all wear prematurely

If your front pulley has a timing mark on it (and please stop calling it a harmonic balancer!), then this for the IGNTIION timing, not the CAM timing. It will line up with the mark at 8deg Before TDC.
