Has anyone every replaced the selector cable on a auto trans on there suzuki ? I possible could someone put some pic's up or a link to a post where some one else has done it.... The reason i ask is my reverse light's are working temperamentally which is annoying me as i'v just fitted a bright LED reverse light for night driving an sometime when i'm in reverse, reversing the reverse light's don't go an sometime's they do, which leed me too believe is the reverse switch ? How ever after more research on this i'v found information too suggest that a lose selector cable can have the same effect, and when i'm driving offroad and the selector is in the drive position my trans seem's too want too drop gear randomly for no apparent reason repeatedly. Any help would be greatly appreciated..... Cheers, Clay |

I never found the cause for my intermittent reverse light issue, so I wired in a manual switch. I also have an intermittent selector switch, so wired in a bypass starter switch. Not a fix, but a good back up. My guess is the switch/bypass mechanism at box end of cable, but cable could be a problem? |

I put my LED reverse lights onto the rear fog light circuit. |

The cause of the intermittent reverse/starter issue is dirt/wear/possible cable adjustment (but most likely dirt or wear) in the range switch ( I think that's the right term) on the side of the auto. It's a black plastic widget that the selector lever on the side of the auto runs into. My donor car had intermittent reverse lights and sometimes refuses to start. A bump of the lever clears the problem, so I assume it's dirty contacts in the switch. Considering how fiddly/time consuming it is to get to, it's a low priority job. My auto was smothered in engine oil due to a leaking distributor housing, and I assumed the range switch had been dirtied up from years of oil coverage. I have no idea if they are rebuildable, but I bet one could be adapted from almost any AW-4 equipped car. I would never bypass the starter switch in an automatic. I can think of no good reason to compromise safety in that way, especially in a car with deep reduction gearing in the transfer. If the intermittent starting problem is that bad or annoying, its time to replace/repair the range switch. Steve. |

Cheers guy's for your valued input, I do hope it's just the switch my self or even better a lose terminal at the switch as i not really good with the electronics an circuity's of vehical, Just your basic give it a goo an hope for the best type of job as i learn along the way whilst doing it. How ever i did wire the LED reverse light too the vehical reverse light,l an at night when the dame things decides too go boi shes bright, bright enough too freeze a opossum in it's track as i slowly reverse over the pest. For real tho thanks guys i think ill take it too a auto electricianan an hope they don't charge an arm an leg too do the switch as they usually do in my area |

If it is the selector switch they can be removed pulled apart and cleaned up. They suffer from the grease going hard and stoping the spring loaded contacts from doing what there suppose do. I striped mine 4 to 5 screws hold it together and cleaned it with kero then polished the contacts with a fibreglass pen and put some silicon grease in it. Mine some times would not start and Suzuki quoted me $850.00 for one and I did ask twice if that was correct. |
