Hey everyone!
I want to get reduction gears for my 1991 sierra and was wondering what reduction I should get and where I can find some in Australia?
I'm running 31x10.5r15 mud terrain and I have a 1.3 gti EFI motor.. I go 4wding all most every weekend and its also my daily car...
Cheers

You would have 3 suitable choices:

4.9s or 5.14s from the States. Lowrange Offroad offer both at probably the cheapest you'd find, or
5.25s from TrialJimny

Each of those progressively go from cheapest to most expensive, but in the same order from least to most useful.

As above. Depends on terrain though.

4.9, 5.14, the 5.25 mentioned and 6.5's are all options.

Personally 5.14 and 6.5's are my pick.

This is a good question, I am to running 31"s and will also be looking at reduction gears over the next couple of months.

Are most people running a transfer case support brace with reduction gears? or does the standard housing hold up ok? I note a few companies are selling these and stating a "must have" item with gears.

if you have gears, you really should have a rock toy ring.

big gears like 6.5s will tear cases in half without it.

something like this?

Very resonable price for some extra protection

yep, they will need to be welded to arms though.

they are designed to be just part of a custom mount for the trasnfer

I've never run a ring. Only braced arms. Without issue. Not to say it isn't something good to buy and I will be getting one, but it's not necessary.

I crash landed my whole car on the transfer(onto rock) several times, broke a few "Unbreakable" ROCK4X poly mounts, bent the shifter inside the transfer from the transfer coming up against the floor, shattered quite a few rear uni joints and destroyed god knows how many leaf springs through clutch dumping axle wrap but never had so much as a drop of oil leak out of the transfer. :D

I had 6.4s for a long time without a cradle/ring etc but drove carefully, once I put the cradle on, I punished my car.
I recently chewed a set of gears apart whilst driving down the highway. It was the hottest day this summer, and a long drive towing a trailer. From inspection it looks like it had failed over a period of time.

If buying new, I would only buy the 6.5s (solely for the lifetime warranty).
Low 1st is too low for most uses, but the cost of a new set of gears helps me justify the annoyance.

If buying second hand (even if they are new, but someone else bought and hasn't installed yet, it would need to be cheap). If the manufacturers warranty is expired or nontransferable, I wouldnt pay new or near new prices.

The BenT xfer arms looks like a decent option.

Don't get me wrong i love my 6.5 for the rocks etc but far far to low for beach I hate driving on beach with them
I just put a 1 lt case in slightly lower then the 1.3 case from what I read
Or just buy a slighty higher set for allrounder
