I'll try to keep it brief...

Fresh engine, I had set at TDC with the distributor to fire #1 cyl. And it's not firing up. Brand new leads, The coil has spark..

Any ideas, something I have overlooked? Or just keep cranking it.

don't they need to be timed off #4? :? :? :?

i'll have a sirch, there are some good thread on this & one just recently.

tdc or tdc with no1 on compression?

TDC #1 at full compression

Here's a little vid of when I first started the key. Excuse the commentary ;)
It's like it want's to fire but it doesn't. The smell from the exhaust is of fuel, so spark is the only problem.

It is *firing* in that vid but sounds like your timing is wayyyyyyyyyyy off. What else did you do to the motor? Timing belt?

Full rebuild, new timing belt.

Which mark did you line the cam pulley up with? E or I?

Did you set it to "fire" at TDC (which is how you set Cam Timing), or did you set it to fire at 8degBTDC (which is where Ignition Timing should be)? Sounds like your timing is 8 deg retarded!!

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

Yup, It's retarded!!
After a fair bit more reading, googalizing and youboobing, I need to get it at BTDC, And that's the magic number I was looking for.

Now should I remove the distributor when #1 cyl is at 8degree BTDC or can it simply be adjusted?

Oh and I set it to I gnition on the cam pulley.

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

There's your problem. It should be the "E" mark lining up on the cam pulley. In regards to the ignition timing the engine should at least run with anything around +/- 20degrees TDC then you can get your light on it to correct.

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

That would explain where I fkd up.

So just to be clear, remove the timing belt, set cam pulley to E @ TDC, Crank w/#1 piston @ TDC, move both back to 8 degree BTDC and remove and adjust the distributor to fire @ #1cyl.

Now just a real noob question, The firing order is 1342, on the dist. cap it has 1234 in a clockwise motion. So I put cyl#1 on 1, 3 on 2, 4 on 3, 2 on 4... yeah?

Oh and thanks guy's, This has been a hell of a lot more useful than my workshop manual. I'm now going to go and set it on fire.

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

Go look at your dizzy cap again. I will have 1342 in a counter clockwise rotation.

1.Align the crank so 1&4 are at TDC
2.Align the E mark on the cam sprocket
3.Determine weather 1 or 4 is on its compression/power stroke
4.Align dizzy to point roughly at which cylinder is on compression/power stroke
5. fire it up
6. throw a timing light on it

I have done as you suggested but still no luck.

I know it's not exactly rocket science which is the most frustrating part, but I'm not sure what else I'm getting wrong.. :(

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

So you have lined the cam sprocket with the "E" mark? How did you determine which cylinder was on compression/power stroke?

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

Yep E on TDC, I put a long screwdriver down the spark plug tube on #1 & 4 cyl to determine TDC, also lined up the keyway to TDC.

Post subject:  Re: Timing issue?

You also need to determine which cylinder is on compression as that's the one you need to set the dizzy to. Should be able to determine this by pulling the plugs and holding your hand over the plug hole and turning it over with a breaker bar. When its building pressure its on its power stroke.
