Can you start it in 1st, with clutch engaged? Then drive away afterwards?
If so, I would guess the synchro is gone, have you tried rev matching and doing a clutchless shift 2nd-1st?

Most vehicles won't select 1st gear easily when moving

When you say moving, how fast are you moving?

try rev matching, remember there is a big gap between 1st and 2nd.
So you need to near double the revs it was when in 2nd (approx 1.9 times), and then apply pressure on the gear stick and it should slot in pretty easily.

Say you are at 2000 rpm in 2nd whilst rolling, you need to press the clutch in, and open the throttle, to get the engine rpm to 3800 (1.9x2000).
This should be done quickly, without losing too much speed.

EDIT: xplainy bits mor gud, wif mor stuff

Change the oil for something decent like Penrite then if it still doesn't go in just slam it

So to confirm,

You can select first when stationary.. idle revs
You have trouble going from first to second while moving - even though slowly

Is it... changing to or from 1st... or changing into 2nd?
not many cars like shifting down into 1st while in motion, if its going into 2nd that's your problem then maybe its 2nd syncro.
2nd and 3rd syncros are the ones that usually crap out in all boxes as they are the ones that are used the most. eg, how many times do you shift through these two before you get into 5th

Try "double clutching" to check while moving - put outta gear clutch in - rev the engine ( give it lots) and try forcing the lever into other gear as revs drop.

I've been trying to swap a 5 speed vit one 130ks for a 3speed auto and havn't had many takers. Wld be keen on the 4 speed but sounds like dramas.

If I have no luck the g16 5speed is going behind the g16... (my SJ g13 one in there crunches)
