OK Mundane topic time.
I have an F10 in my LJ80, with a G13a/G13b Electronic ignition distributor in it. Has been in there over 3 years, has leaked the whole time, but was epically bad before I pulled the car down for some work. For those who are not familiar with how an F8 sits in an LJ80 (so hence my F10 is the same), the distributor does not point upwards like in a Sierra, it points straight out towards the passenger side, if anything slightly downhill. Also to clarify, mine does not leak around the O-ring which seals them into the dizzy housing, it leaks up the shaft, and out the vacuum advance mechanism, and also straight out of the cap itself (it would never have seized!).

Anyway, in my frustration I drilled the pin that holds the gear on the bottom of the dizzy shaft off, and disassembled the dizzy. Does anyone know what is supposed to stop these things from leaking? or do they use the fact they are pointing uphill in a Sierra, and hope gravity keeps all the oil in place? (picture below of the dizzy case, shaft, and 2 bushes it runs on, note there are no seals or O-rings!). Alternately does anyone know what stops a standard F8a dizzy from leaking? (I might rip one of them apart on the weekend purely for a comparison).

I'm not putting this back together with another Exon Valdez challenging oil leak, so any help on what I need to do to stop it would be appreciated.

So those bushings came from the housing? What is the ID and OD of them? Can you show a pic of the top of the housing with the bushing removed.

12mm ID, 15.7mm OD on the two bushes.

Too dark to get a good photo of the top down minus bush at the moment, will do tomorrow. One horrid picture I took earlier with the bush still in place, and those 2 shims floating around making the photo even dodgier!:

The G13A/G13B distributor should have a seal in the base - it would normally be just below the advance weights. Suzuki does not supply the seal separately, but they are available from seal suppliers.

OK, this one didn't have one. I might have to see if I can figure out where it should go, and what size it should be.

Pulled apart an F8a dizzy this arvo.... it has a bearing and a seal! Currently thinking of a hybrid dizzy, looks possible, just a bit of work, and will loose the vacuum advance.... but meh.

Im sure you could jam an o-ring in there somewhere if it came to it.

An O ring will not seal for very long - the seal is a regular spring loaded "lip" seal and sits at the very top of the distributor housing, above the bushings and below the shims that fit under the centrifugal advance plate.

I don't recall if my dizzy had bushings or bearings, but it did have a seal, in fact, that was the reason I took it apart - the seal was leaking.

There must be 2 different types of dizzys, because there is no provision for a seal in mine (the advance plate runs on those shims which rest on top of the top bushes flange). I've got another 1.3 dizzy I may pull apart, and there is that one Tanshi said he has also.

The F8a dizzy has a sealed bearing right at the top, and the seal is just below that (maybe 10mm down from the top).


Also was quite clear yesterday that the mechanical advance in the 1.3 dizzy is notably more than in the F8 dizzy..... I'm thinking thats why my 1 Litre does rev out so insanely well.....lol
