Post subject:  Sierra 1.3/1.6 L engine & single point injection conversion

Hi all,

I need some advice & clarification.

I am doing an engine conversion.

That is, a 1.3 litre 8 valve cylinder head matched to a G16B litre block. The engine has been completely rebuilt & configured to suit the 8 valve cylinder for either a carburettor setup or a single point fuel injection system. In addition to this I am installing a single point fuel injection system from a Suzuki Swift.

I am led to believe that the camshaft from a 1.3 litre 8 valve cylinder head from a Sierra will be ensure correct operation of both the engine & single point fuel injection system & computer.

In addition to this I am led to believe that the distributor assembly from the 1.3 litre Sierra (i.e. electronic) will not drive or communicate with the computer. I am led to believe that I need a " Hall Effect " type distributor assembly possibly from 1.6 litre Vitara engine. However, in saying that I am led to believe that the distributor from the 1.3 litre needs to be retrofitted with the internals of the 1.6 litre distributor.

Has anyone had success with installing a single point fuel injection system from a Suzuki Swift?

If so, can anyone offer any other advice on this type of conversion? I don’t want to get to a point of no return only to find out that this type of conversion would not be successful.

Any & all advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Gino

From what I recall is that the Oz spec TBI units all use a variable reluctance (VR) dizzy not hall effect. If this is the case then a g13-g16a dizzy can be easily modified to suit or an early G16b VR dizzy will slip straight in. Unfortunately I cannot 100% confirm that your particular swift TBI ECU uses a VR sensor as opposed to hall effect but what I do know is that the VR type was pretty common on the early stuff.

What year Swift? which ECU (part number) are you using?

I believe 1990. I will need to check the part number of the ECU.

The ECU part number is detailed below.

DENSO
H1
1.6 SPI MT
33920-71C1 1
101120-0582
12 V

I haven't seen one of those before, I will see what it says in the FSM

Its a VR sensor with four 'teeth'

Thank you for the response.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does the VR sensor look like or is it part of the distributor?

If it's part of the distributor, what year / model Vitara had it. And will it mate up to the 1.3 litre Sierra camshaft?

Its inside the distributor, I don't know what sort of Sierra distributor you have, if its a carb dizzy then there was an article on here about how to modify it.

Thank you.

It's a distributor from a 1.3 litre Sierra carburetted engine.

I have since been advised that the distributor from a 1.3 litre Sierra is an " Electronic Hall Effect " type.

Do you have the distributor already? Could you take the dizzy cap off and post up a picture? Will be easy to tell exactly what dizzy you have. I'm not aware of any Australian sierras coming out with hall effect dizzy's.

The EFI Sierra dizzys are usually hall Effect, the ECU design is very similar to the 56VB ECUs used many 8V Vitaras, the carb engine uses a VR sensor.

Mine is swift 16V TBI on an 8V G13A head with G13A dizzy.

Ok, thanks for that feed back.

I will locate my distributor, take photos & post them here.

I have since taken photos of the distributor from my 1.3 litre engine, refer below.

Yep that is just the standard VR type dizzy (not hall effect). You will need to modify it (like above) by simply removing the coil driver module and connecting the VR wires to the appropriate pins on your ECU.

Rhinoman: Do you know if these ECUs are in control of ignition timing or does it still rely on mechanical/vac advance from the dizzy?

If the ECU does control the ignition timing you will also have to lock the advance plate (just keep the vac advance unit disconnected) and the mechanical advance flyweights (remove the springs and replace with zip ties etc)

ECU controls ignition timing. My mind reading skills tell me that you want to look inside that ECU :-)

I'm currently revamping my website but the direct link for the FSM (including AWD supplement) is here:

Hahahaha of course I would  . Check your email when you get a chance, think I've worked out the VR stuff.

Thanks guys for the feedback & responses, much appreciated.

Out of curiosity, as I understand it, I don't need to install a special fuel tank for the fuel injection only an electric EFI type fuel pump is that correct?

Author:  JrZook [ Sat Mar 30, 2013 12:26 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Sierra 1.3/1.6 L engine & single point injection convers

That is correct. You can just run an in-line high pressure EFI fuel pump
