Post subject:  Jimny vvt gearing

I'm wondering what would be the best gearing for a jimny?

I'm looking at putting a 29-30 inch tyre on my jimny and i want to retain my highway revs, any where between 3,000 and 3,500 is what i want.
I know if i put a non vvt gearbox in the vvt it gives me a better option for gearing but the price for these gearboxes are anywhere from $400 up to $800.
If i'm going to do this i might as well spend a bit more money and do a custom auto swap, which gives me a much more better choice and more drive ability.

I've got parts accessible for a sierra TC swap, but wanting to know what TC gears i need to keep my highway revs.

Parts i've got access to are:
a BB transfer case
a BB manual diff gears
a WT front tail shaft
a WT transfer case

I don't understand how to calculate the percentage in gearing to make it right, i would much appreciate any help/opinions.

Those hwy revs seem a bit low to me, you'd be better to aim for 4000 at true 100k/h.

Gearing a Vvt Jimny is tough. If you are going to swap gearbox make sure the remote shift linkage is complete and that it includes the rear gearbox mount which supports the remote shift. A stock geared WTSierra transfer will suffice. If you drop in a set of gears your highway revs will be too high, so a diff swap may be worthwhile.

A cheaper option would be to swap in a non Vvt transfer but again a diff swap may improve highway driving.

Sorry but I don't know anything about autos

Many many threads have discussed this.

The only way to retain low revs in High and increase ratio and revs in low with a Jimny case is with an APIO gearset. Got $2,000+?

Going say 20% lower in high and low will improve offroad rev range considerably and will increase your highway revs beyond stock setup, but in my opinion this is not a bad thing. You will get your acceleration back and won't have to drop back to 4th at the slightest incline.

AFAIK trialjimny is the only other maker of Jimny transfer gears. 20%, 24% and 27% - depending on which box (auto/man, VVT/non)

Thanks for your reply, but i think you maybe misread my topic or i didn't come across clearly.
But i don't want to touch the gearbox if its not necessary.
Why is it the highway revs should be at 4000? and if you reckon it should be around 4000 will that give me better fuel econemy?
If i put the BB TC and diff gears in what type of percentage will that give me?
My highway revs are now with 215 75 15 at 3200 and im pretty sure thats true 100k/h.
thanks.

I found this topic but it doesn't break down individually on as a whole

i really dont want to put gears in a jimny case because if im going to spend that much money i would prefer to go away from the chain drive as its prone for problems, i would just do a custom auto with a WT case. thanks for your reply.

Not talking about gearbox mods.

The bulk of my research has been on utilising electronic Jimny cases, so this is the info I have posted. Either it helps or it doesn't.

And yes, chain can be a problem. The auto VVT case I put in started skipping at the end of one day's outing. More recently, the chain in my original manual box has started skipping under heavy load, ie. from standing start uphill with traffic behind, but not to the same extent - only skips one tooth.

I am looking into the possibility of installing an adjustable chain guide. Just an idea at this stage.

Thank you for your comments about the chain case. Think it will be easier to do away with the jimny case as there is to many cons and not enough pros.

I've been told that the chain in the VVT t-case is much wider and much less prone to slip than the non-VVT.

About the tyre, i run 29" without gearing in my VVT and is perfectly fine (apart from more fuel consuption).

Let's not forget that the VVT is about 25% more reduced than the non-VVT in 1st gear:

Crawl Ratio VVT: 4,425 * 2,002 * 4,300 = 1:38,093

Crawl ratio non-VVT: 3,652 * 2,145 * 3,909 = 1:30,621

Not to mention that the 5th gear on the non-VVT is overdrive (0,8x), whilst on the VVT is 1:1.

All manual Jimnys BTW.

A non-VVT t-case into a VVT will give a slight reduction: 4,425 * 2,145 * 4,300 = 1:40,813

To reduce more on Low and less on High only with a proper geared WT t-case or APIO Star58 gears.

Other options apart from touching the t-case or gearbox is start looking fro R&P sets for the VVT Jimny.

cheers

around town and stuff it will be fine but i'm wanting to be able to drive on the highway without having to drop back too many gears as i'm wanting to be able to tow my camper which is 500+ kgs.
thanks for the ratios it will come in handy when i learn how to understand ratios at the present moment i'm just seeing numbers.
thank you
