| Post subject: | sierra gearbox help |
hi, i have not too long ago done a 1.6 conversion 2 my zuk, made the adapter ring up for the gearbox myself(possibly my problem). Since the conversion it has been leaking oil out the slot at the bottom of the box,it had leaked before the conversion but never a problem, its definately gear oil so thinking its the front input seal and i have a bearing noise, which goes when i get on the clutch.it has had this noise before the conversion, but not as bad.Im pulling the box out tonight to do a new input seal and will replace the bearing....BUT today when i got back from a full days wheeling, i lost a bit of oil,150mL but when i drained it there are very fine shavings in there but everything sounds, feels like normal.Any ideas what could be wrong or if it is my adaptor plate that has caused this??thanks, matt |

unless the plate isnt dead flat and its bending the input shaft I dont think it could be that, does the spigot in the flywheel hold the input shaft properly? i'd say the box has had it, if the front bearing is toast chances are the rest are too and the filings wont be helping the syncros and so on I'd be planning on a full rebuild |

cheers for the reply,im unsure whats gonna happen hoping it wont be anything dear as im outa $$$ but yeah i didnt get it out this arv, loosened all bolts ready for tomorrow tho ill check the seal, thrust bearing etc but yeah its got me a bit worried.would i be better off getting this one fixed or chase up another box?? As for the plate,i would think its flat as,i checked it as i cut it so im unsure what could be wrong and also pretty sure spigot is fine,im no mechanic tho??? |

the shavings tho definately had that bearing white metal sort of look about them, thats not from my noisy thrust bearing tho is it,it is from a bearing in the box (if any) if its coming out in the oil?? |

yeah its in the box, the noise isnt your throwout bearing if thats what you mean (one that pushes the clutch, it will be noisy foot on clutch and quiet foot off |

i had the same noise on my n/t. replaced the throw out noise was less but still there then found metal in the oil at next change. pulled it apart the centre bearing on the main shaft had collapsed. 6x new main bearings later from a bearing shop not auto shop. gearbox is best its ever been no noise. cost $130.00 with oil ect very easy job heaps easyer than i thought ( first gearbox rebuild) if you have or have access to a bearing puller and a press hope this helps |

Gearbox bearings wont be white metal/babbit half shell type bearings like a crankshaft, they're all roller bearings. But yeah they sound cactus. Hybrid on here has done a gearbox rebuild recently too, I remember him mentioning it was pretty straight forward. |

thanks for info fellas,a mate had a spare old 1.3 box for me today allready drilled etc for the 1.6 plate.apparently syncro for 3rd is a bit shitty in it but if you lot say its easy enuff to do the bearings, seal etc in my box ill give it a go at a later date.first off ill see if this new box stops my leakage problem so i can see if somethings out of line with my plate i made etc?????i cant think of anything that could have made it out of line, maybe the conversion and this problem were coinsidence? |

most plate or sheet isnt real flat, even a bit of dirt between faces can cause trouble but it sounds like it had it coming anyway |

yeah i ran a ruler over it and was pretty happy with it being flat, thought it would of been ok,guess this new one will tell but i dont want to wreck two 11evl off outers has said maybe my bolt holes have put it out of line wrecking it,could this be the case?my mate that helped me thinks that it could be and has said so from the start, making the input run out and wreck seal and now probably bearing. As i also asked on outers(SORRY) |

today i started it up with thw new gearbox and instantly made the same noise off the clutch so im guessing that it is my plate and holes that have it out of line.so i turned it straight off, didnt wanna wreck another box possibly or a seal even.So at the moment im hoping i can make benT's ring work with it,any ideas anyone? |

Hey mate, I couldn't get BenTs studs to work on mine either. The fancy silver ones from his kit that is. I ended up using 2 of the bolts from his kit (the top ones I think) and just using the stock ones for the remainder. Damo was right too. I have done a rebuild recently using the kit from locktup4x4. It wasn't overly difficult, only a touch more technical than a transfer rebuild. I do have a problem with the selector for 5th and reverse though. If you rebuild it make sure it works on the bench before putting it back in lol. And take lots of pics as you pull it apart to refer back to. |

did you use his countersunk bolts with yours hybrid???everything else should work from his kit with mine, would just have to make the countersunk hole in the plate bigger to suit my tapped m12 holes in the gbox or chase up another gearbox untouched then itll be a straight bolt up,anyone got a box?? |

I can't honestly remember which ones I used. I'm pretty sure it was just the top zinc finish0 bolts and nuts. Then it had like these 2 studs with a threaded bit at each end. I couldnt get these to work with mine. I think someone had messed with the back of my g16. It had been in a sierra previously with a home made kit. I mainly bought his kit for the engine mount adapter and the gearbox adapter plate. where are you located? |

im in tamworth nsw. yeah i have a home made kit and nothing changed with the back of the engine tho,no drilling or tapping only did that with the gearbox so i either have to drill the proper plate out or get another box,not that easy to find so far |

I thought if you were in Brisbane I could give you a hand. If its just a matter of countersinking the plate I'd do that. Coventry fasteners or a similar industrial supplies joint should have a countersinking bore. Or take a carton of booze into a machine shop friday after lunch. One of the boys would do it for ya lol. |

i work at at a machine job,im the apprentice and i stuffed up somewhere with my bolt holes haha,i have access to a couple of really good countersink bits so i think ill get a new plate and sink to suit, cant really get off centre then.i think my box must just be slightly twisted round,or across due to incorrect hole centres, but it bolts up. cheers for the offer tho,im about to finish pulling the second gbox out,2 times in 2 days now |

Lol when I did it mine came in and out 4-5 times in a 3 day weekend. So many clutch issues it wasn't funny. My chest and shoulders were black and blue for a week. |

well ive seen all i needed to see,i officially lick the bag haha i stuffed up with my plate, clearly visible when ontop of a tracing of bents plate.
i could go again now that ive seen where its wrong but instead i think ill get the real deal this time, would of payed for itself allready is the thing.from the look of it when its on the template it is shifting it across to passenger side and also rotating it looking from rear of box towards motor clockwise, explaining the seal from the shaft being run out and putting side load on the bearing etc too for my noise id say |

digging this up again as i replaced my home made ring with a proper benT adaptor kit,Got a new fully recoed gearbox with new seals, bearings etc thinking it could not go wrong with all this, all back together started it and same thing, noisy off the clutch quiet when clutch to floor. The old box was clearly visible that it chewed the front seal, oil everywhere and i dont want to run, drive it now and wreck another box.Starter motor etc also went straight in no probs. Any one have any ideas on where i have gone wrong or what has gone wrong??all bolts and studs etc with the engine/box slide straight in not a single bit of fighting due to being out of line.Gearbox rubber mount is out a little but the rubber pulled to shape easily but as it was all allready tight at engine end the rubber mount is all that moved any help would be great thankyou -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i made a rhs engine mount also when i did the conversion, could this be it??i have the new one ere now but dont see the need as the box mounts up to the engine so nicely |

Did you check the clutch friction plate, pressure plate and the bush in the flywheel why it was all apart? Maybe the previous misalignment has shagged/broken something there. Exactly what is the noise like? Grinding sort of noise, or just a vibration like an exhaust pipe rubbing on the chassis? Does the noise change in volume as you rev the engine a bit, or does only the frequency change. If its more like a vibration maybe check around the engine mounts for any sign of the engine side of things touching the chassis. |

| Post subject: | Re: sierra gearbox help |
no i didnt check the flywheel etc or the bush as i knew they looked good before when the conversion was done and didnt give the misalignment a thought, only really thought of the box.it is a grinding, bearing sort of noise in neutral at idle you hear it,as you accelerate gets a bit louder but tonight i took it for a drive to a mates to show him the noise started the car off the clutch was noisy, got on the clutch then off again and it was basically gone instantly asthough something shifted or was dry or i have no idea |
