Does anyone know if you need an engineering cert for changing a G16A to a G16B in a SWB vitara ? - TO my mind you would only need to change the engine number on the rego docs as vitara's did come out with the G16B and so are already ADR approved .....

If the engine came in the same chassis as you are putting it into, you need to ensure that you have the same spec on other stuff (brakes/suspesion/emissions) in teh car that you are going to put it into.

Then i do not belive you need any sort of modification plate, as you arent modifying anything, merely taking standard bits from the same car, just a different model.

even when you need a mod plate for other conversions you dont need any emissions test if you keep all the same emissions gear as what came standard on that engine (ecu, exhaust, cat etc)

but dont' take my word for it.

No you are correct - the ADR rules state that you can replace an engine with a motor that is offered in the same car, as the G16B was it's all good, and yes you have to retain all the original bolt ons... So I,m all good.

I'd check with someone at the mods department first, as your motor change requires fuel system alterations.

I recently mod plated a sierra that swapped to a G16A EFI from a G16A carby, and it required a new plate due to the fuel system alterations.

The ADR's dont say anything about modifications they are a standard.

The old rules said you could replace the engine with any engine offered IN THAT MODEL provided all supporting equipment was carried over.
This was meant for the likes of bolting all the V8 gear into a 6cyl car, with a SWB vit you might strictly not be able to use that ruling as AFAIK the same model SWB was never offered in EFI and Carby together.

But the wagons were EFI at the same time as carby SWB so maybe that could be used, but then they had bigger brakes.



I reckon you could ask 6 people and get 10 answers, if you just did it I doubt anyone would know or care.
