| Post subject: | Silly Me !!!! Water + Engine =???????? |
Ok i just went out for a little 4x4 on sunday arvo to test out my new rear locker and 235 S/T coopers on my 98 jimny ( no snorkel dumb on my behalf) i went through a a water crossing and a couple of big muddie puddles. Ok then a day later my boss was telling me i was lucky that my car didn't get in my airfilter/engine soo anyway long story short i open my airfilter case up and the filter was covered with mud and dripping with water soo i might have water in my engine my can has started to make a Ticking noise and a noise like when your fan belt is slipping but its not. WHAT DO I DO TO GET THE WATER OUT????? OR HOW DO I CHECK THAT THERE IS EVEN WATER THERE?? |

Drain the oil, will be pretty obvious if there is water in it, when I flooded my engine it just went ting and stopped |

I don't think the op implied there was water in the fuel system. I can't comment on ticking, but a wet air filter doesn't automatically mean anything bad has happened to the motor- it's just the air filter doing its job. In any case, the damage has been done now. Replace the air filter, do an oil change and keep your fingers crossed. The squealing might well be caused by a dying pulley/alternator. If you have muddy water in the air box you may well have filled up the alternator, idlers etc. Deep muddy water is stupid hard on cars. Best avoided. The fun wears off once the bills mount up. dont get too enthusiastic, if its still runing, you're all right.... If you did damage the engine significantly with water, you would know about it, in the form of a bent conrod. id pull off the intake, clean it good, leave it in the sun to dry, get a new airfilter. Go to town on cleaning the engine bay with degreaser and a hose, get rid of any mud so you can attempt to see any problems. As for the fun noises, who knows, i cant hear over the internet, keep an eye on it. |

What difference is pulling the intake manifold off going to make? If the engine has been hot since it got wet, and the filter remained intact, there won't be anything to clean out of the engine. Steve. |

If that question is directed at my post i wasnt all that clear in that i just mean anything before the butterfly (intake pipes and stuff) Though you can use judgetment and if you pull out the filter and find that its clean as in the intake piping, then leave it as it is. I got the impression that some mud/water had gotten past the filter from the first post. |

Even if some water made it past the filter, if the filter hasn't ruptured or torn, then the water entering he motor will be clean. In fact, more harm is likely to be done to the motor by pulling the ducting off than leaving everything intact and just swapping in a new filter. If the filter passed dirty/muddy water, any engine damage has already been done. More disassembly won't really help. Just my 2c Steve |

ok whatever, do whatever you want OP, id clean mine if its had mud in it. And if it damages it pulling it off, then it needed to be fixed/repalced anyway. |

Like Gwagensteve said... If the engine is running there is no damage.. The water is already out... The only thing you can do is an oil change... I did the same and that cost a Starter, Generator and waterpump |

My previous Jimny took a drink when it was still fairly new, got it started, drove with a wet filter for four days, changed oils and filters and all was good again, with never a problem for years until I sold it. |

Small amounts of water vapourised into the air intake whilst running, was an old trick to remove carbon deposits from combustion chambers |

Yeah lucky you didn't get it in your air fliter, if you tried turn it on after getting enough water in the engine you would've had a bad time, had my air fliter soaking last month in my corolla....... but i didn't try turn the motor and then took the plugs out and start the engine water everywhere even out of the exhaust |

A friend of ours drove through flood water and hydroliced the motor, it just sucked up water into the intake and stalled.(lancer) Once we got it out of the water I pulled the plugs turned it over, a lot of water sprayed out.funny thing was I put the plugs in and the motor just bogged down when I turned it over, the water was trapped in the inlet so I just repeated the process again about 4 times . Long story short we got it running and drove two hours home with no air cleaner it didn't miss a beat, I told the owner to get a service asap but it took her a month or so . Don't pull it apart just service it, and if u hydrolic a motor its not allways the end |
