There is an 08 J20a for sale here and my 00 model j20a is giving me some issues. I know alot of the electronic stuff is different but if I buy the motor and bolt all my stuff to the long motor will it drop straight in? I couldn't see suzuki changing the engine mount locations or the the gearbox pattern or even the bolt holes on the block but don't want to spend $800 and find it wont fit. Dave |

Did you find the cause of the tractor noise? |

Nope no idea what teh tractor noise is/was. I flushed it and put new oil in it and a new radiator and a new idler tensioner thing and it was going alright. Now it sounds like a valve is rattling away ontop of cylinder number 1 Must of been all the paaaarp paaaaarp paaaaaarp paaaaarp rev limiter driving Dave |

LOL. Definatly not! It was loads of fun but it frucked my stater motor pretty quick. I had it rebuilt pretty cheap which was good then it had the overheating stuff so thats when the new radiator went in :p I am very glad that I go the gopro vid of it to remember what not to do to a daily driving GV |

you would have to change the crankshaft over , the crankshaft position trigger is different .. one has 6 teeth and the other has lots . the 2000 model will be a SQ420 not JB420.. |

I believe the head and cams may also be different - I'm not certain which year the change was made - so take a look - on the 2000 J20 the cam position sensor will be on the back of the head driven by the exhaust cam, and the later production it's on top of the head near the back, and senses a wheel on the intake cam. |

grrr. so it is looking like it will be more headaches then it is worth. might just have to do a rebuild on existing. bummer |

i was hoping that it would kinda bolt in and save me the hassels of chasing gremlins but if there is the sort of changes needed that have been mentioned then I will save the $750 and put it toward rebuilding existing. Dave |

I've also read the the vitara J20 crank is stronger than the SX4 J20 crank. It seems the differences are significant enough for it not to be worth pursuing. |

Hello Bohuler The J20a in yours doesnt have the improved forged steel crank all you need for this engine is to use your ancillaries and your sump and oil pickup it bolts right up. The cam angle sensor is smaller but does the same thing. ??? Now i am just confused! Dave |

Dave For GV or vitara j20a engines there is just a sump and oil pickup as well as transferring your ancillaries over. If you have this CAS unit with inductive setup it should be much easier than earlier CAS with disc which I thought was from 1997-99 then changed to 2000? can anyone confirm???. Attachment: cas.JPG The CAS unit with inductive pickup above is different on the sx4 where the inductive pickup is on the rear of the inlet camshaft. This pickup above sits on the rear of the rocker cover but the output signal produced is used by the ECM to determine the exact position of number 1 piston in the engine, as it would on the exhaust camshaft CAS unit with disc also working off the no1 piston. It could be possible the ECUS could have code for both setups as Vitara g16b also used inductive pickup only of the SOHC 16v cam. As for crank strength the later J20a crank is much improved over earlier versions of cast j18 and j20 from what Ive read in many forums with Road and track also turboing the j20a sx4 aerio with 7psi netting 221hp and 204lbs of torque over the original 143hp tuned unit the US got. Quote: the J20 would be the weakest of all, it has tiny thin rods and a cast crank, 84x90. it has the exact same head and cams has the 1.8L. this engine was also used in vitara/tracker then came the J23 with stronger rods (same size), a cast iron lower block girdle and a bigger bore, 90x90. AFAIK this engine is a north america exclusive. I've never seen it referenced in foreign markets. after that the SX4's J20A came out. it has 84x90 b&s, cast iron girdle and stronger rods from the J23 and a new forged crank along with higher compression pistons. all the cranks from the J20-J23-J20A are all the same size. so are the rods, although some are stronger than others. these are the 4 engines of the same family from which you can swap internals from one another. interesting fact of no use here but i'll write it anyway. the same rod size is used in the H27 V6 but it has a different part number for some reason. it's the exact same dimension. Ive PMd Fordom to see what he knows he seems clued up on the electrical side of things, its all I could muster but at worst the exaust cam from the earlier unit can be used along with the rocker cover which has the provision to secure the CAS unit. |
