dont bother.

its just wank factor, youll get better filtration from a disposable any day of the week. If you end up getting a snorkel grab a unifilter sock to help pre-clean when you bush-bash. thats more than enough

Do they require an increased service interval?

The ryco "performance" oil filters need to be changed every 5000km.

I'm tempted to run them, purely for the fact that they have a hex on them for easy removal.

I am highly skeptical of them based on their claims on the website.

You got the ordinary ones,

"Automotive Premium Wrench-Off Canister Oil Filters
Automotive Premium Canister Oil Filters
K&N Automotive Wrench-Off Canister Oil Filters
Oil Filters for Cars, Trucks, SUV and more!
K&N's premium wrench-off line of automotive and marine canister oil filters were developed to meet the high performance demands of race applications. They have rapidly become popular for their canister strength and durability. These canister style oil filters are designed to handle higher oil pressures than a standard oil filter and can be used with the latest synthetic motor oils. Most of these premium automotive and marine canister oil filters come with a 1 inch welded nut on the top that makes removal easy."

designed for higher oil pressure eh, lucky cause ive seen many oil filters explode due to not being able to hold the oil pressure..not!

Then you got the Pro series.

"
Pro Series Canister Automotive Oil Filters
K&N Pro Series Oil Filters have been specially designed for professional installers and service providers. Their high flow design can help to improve engine performance by reducing oil filter restriction. Our Pro Series Oil Filters have a fluted canister shape so they can be removed with a traditional oil filter wrench commonly available to commercial installers. These Pro Series oil filters provide outstanding filtration and engine protection throughout their service life. They are engineered to handle all grades of synthetic, conventional and blended motor oils. The pleated media provides high capacity making them suitable for extended oil change intervals when used in accordance with the vehicle and motor oil manufacturers recommendation. K&N Pro Series Oil Filters are available for canister and cartridge type oil filter applications.

High-Flow / Low Restriction Design
Rolled Threads
Fluted shape for traditional oil filter wrenches
Anti-drainback valves (where applicable) PSI relief valves (where applicable)
"

I'm cufused about the claim on "extended oil change intervals, but when used in accordance with vehicle and motor oil recomendation". So its ok for extended oil change intervals, but not if the vehicle sais it shouldn't be extended.

So when is it suitable for extended oil change interval? when the vehicle manufacturer doesnt specify an oil change interval?

I do like the nut on top of the oil filter, all oil filters should do this.

The rest? marketing BS.

How much more are they?

tight enough so they wont come off & i'll use a filter tool to make it easier to remove as i've usually got oily hands by that stage, it's in a bit of a shit spot on the H20a in a vitara... the engine bay isn't like a cock in a sock sierra style with room to swing a cat either side of the block.

I have seen a few filters blown off a motor by oil pressure. Some toyota motors have quite a rep for doing it.

The K&N filters are quite heavy compared to oe filters

blown off? (as in unscrewed themselves)

or the filter actually catastrophically fail (failure of the filter itself, while it is still attached)

Post subject:  Re: K&N oil filters

Ends blowen out or the threads stripped as the filter gets blown out

Post subject:  Re: K&N oil filters

I wonder if that is just a symptom of the oil pressure regulator sticking and forcing the oil pressure up.

Oil pump is a PD pump, so it will just keep on pumping against the closed regulator until something gives in. (ie, the filter)

The nut would be good for saving skinned knuckles in tight engine bays. :)

This is an interesting read. Obviously it's not for cars but it's interesting to see what the different manufacturers put in their filters.

Hey shep i just started using the hp1002.

Mainly because as the others have said the oil filter on the 2.5 gv is a real pain to get to. I have 2 types of oil filter wrenches and neither can work. Also the nut on the end will make life easier to take it off.

Only done about 3000 kays since i've put it on, and using castrol magnatec oil, on the dipstick the oil is still a nice goldy colour. Not sure if thats the filter or the oil though.

I decided that seeing as there is no decent info about oil filters out there I would buy a few different ones and then chop them up for a look after doing a oil change

So far I have the oe suzuki filter which I will change this weekend and will slap a k&n filter on

Image

The black one cost $9.90 and the white one cost $19.90.
Anyway will update the thread whenever I do a oil change.

I used the for years on my Commodore. The unit itself is quite stong and I thought they were decent for the money or the money invested in the Commodore. Dunno if I would bother on my zook, either Genuine or Repco IMO is probably the best way to go.

Yeah mate.

The Chrysler filter comparison isn't really relevant for us as I reckon you would be lucky to be able to buy 3 of the filters in that test. Plus those filters are for a seppo piece of crap and not a awesome car.

So far I have a silverline, suzuki, baldwin, ryco, repco, and the 2 K&Ns filters. Will cut them open when I have a bit of time.

From what I recall oil filters usually have a pressure relief valve in them which allows the oil to bypass the filter if it gets blocked, this is to prevent the engine from running dry. Its something to be considered if you run a high-pressure oil pump as you wouldn't want the oil filter to be permanently by-passed.
The two tests that I'd like to have seen done is how well do they filter? and at what pressure does the bypass valve open? the bypass valve may not be an issue with our engines as they run at relatively low pressures.

That's repco part numbers, drop the kn to get K&N part numbers. Hp1002 is the white one.

Thanks Shep, I thought that was just the range code.
I'm surprised at how long the list is of vehicles using the same filter.
