Hi, My 2006 manual Jimny has a noticeable rattling/whining sound when revving over around 2200 rpm in 4th gear 2WD. It is also noticeable in 3rd but not as bad. The noise completely disappears when shifting into 5th and is also not at all noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear. I had a good read around the forum and found a similar post where they were trouble-shooting the possibility of it being the engine "pinging" under load and recommending using premium unleaded to see if it helps but I run the 95 or 98 stuff already. What do you guys/gals think, gearbox/tcase stuffed ? Or heading in that direction ? Have any others had this? thanks for looking, cheers |

If it's only in 3rd and 4th then my bet is rear main bearing in the gearbox. I had identical symptons to what you just described. Take it to a garage, they'll test drive it and tell you what it is for free probably. Then if it is the gearbox you can whip out the gearbox yourself and take it to a Gearbox and diff specialist for repair. It'll cost you about $700 if it's what I think it is. Plus $200 for a clutch as you might as well put one in while you are down there. Mine did the same - 3rd and 4th. It'll get worse quickly, so don't hang around. It's not serious to start with, but in about two weeks mine evolved from whine noise to full 'rattle-about-to-explode' noise. Mine had only done 60,000kms of gentle driving, so it's obviously a fault of somekind, not just general wear and tear. It's reasonable to think my Jimny isn't the only one that could develop this prob. |

Thanks squibbly, damn I was hoping for better news but my gut tells me your right. Will get it to a mechanic tomorrow for opinion as you have advised, no way I can pull this out myself so better start saving big time and fast by the sounds of it Cheers |

Hi, thanks for responses and Perth help offer but i'm up in Darwin Mechanic checked it out today and thinks that it'll be cheaper to hunt around for a low km second had one that get this one rebuilt up here. So far can only find them for $2000+ 2nd hand and of course would then be worried I'll be up for another one again in 20,000 ks etc. Can anyone one recommend someone rebuilding them etc maybe exchange? At least that way it should last for awhile, or spotted any low km ones I could get shipped up here? Also is it tricky to switch to auto in the > 2005 VVT models from manual do you know? Cheer and thanks again for responses people |
