What engine mods can I do to my 84 sj40 it's got the f10a engine and where can I get the stuff I was thinking if chucking a webber on or making it twin carb or something like that But at the most I will turbo it but I would rather upgrade it a little I am not changing the engine |

There's hardly any aftermarket following for the F10as. There are extractors but they already have a 4-2-1 style exhaust, the difference in length between 1st and 4th cylinder primary lengths is 7" but the majority of extractors are no better. F motors have tall rectangular exhaust ports, obviously extractors are made from round tube. I'm not sure how that would effect performance Vs the rectangle ports of the cast manifold. It might help prevent the effects of exhaust pulse reversion? There are camshafts for the them out there but I don't know if anyone still makes them. Forget Webbers, SU HIF38s and Hitachi HJE38W carbs will bolt onto the manifold with simple elongating of the holes. I've got a HS4 SU (1 1/2") bolted to the original manifold with a little bit of work with the Dremel, I haven't run it like that though, the carb needs a rebuild and you'd need to alter the throttle cable I think. You can fit the Harley Davidson CV Mikuni using an off the shelf spigot too. Making a manifold for twin (or more) carbs is relatively complicated because they're heated and the thermostat is part of it. If I was to make a new manifold I'd go for quad carbs off a motorbike. Basically, this is what I've got for the 1l for the LJ. The above 1 1/2" SU, 1.3l elec ignition dizzy, head shaved 1mm for a 9.5:1 compression ratio (which makes bugger all difference but I got the head like that), ports smoothed out with a dremel(lol), port matched inlet ect. I just need a good bottom end to put all that on! I quite like F10as, they're a stout little motor capable of 5 figure RPMs as standard. My stock 1l Sierra went harder than any 1.3l I've driven. There's no getting away from the fact they're a tiny, revvy motor though. It's worth noting that the engine from the current model Barina Spark is a descendant of the F motors. It's 1.2l and 16v. |

I once followed him down the motorway and he was doing 70 to 80mph - it was very quick for a 1 litre. |

Many years ago (ie 1980's), there was a UK company called Red Lion making a replacement inlet manifold for the F10A to fit a Weber 40mm sidedraught DCOE. They were rare back then, but keep an eye on UK E-bay and one might turn up. |

DO you mean Redline? they are in the US and I only recall them making the manifolds for the 1.6, the only manifold that I recall was made in Aus for twin Webers (using small chokes!). A couple of years ago there was a company in Belgium making them but its a lot of money considering how well the SU works. |

My 1l Sierra (stock as a rock and very run down) was like that, sitting on a real world 110 was easy as and hills didn't phase it. Then I put the 30s on (no gearing at that point), the head corroded right through into the combustion chamber on No.3 and I pancaked the muffler. It'd struggle to get over 90 on the flat. |

F10a's are great! the one in my budget build cops abuse every time it go's out. and still comes back for more. its good for about 90ish on the flat with 32's. can wheel a WHOLE weekend on 30ltrs of fuel. hell it some how leaks oil into the water, so we run half a can of degresser in the radiator to keep him cool and flush it every day.. keeps coming back for more and loving life! |

Start with the electronic ignition. Easiest, cheapest, most reliable mod to do to them. Drop a G13 dizzy in place of the 1L dizzy, and hook the vacuum advance up to the charcoal canister barb on the manifold. Not only will you get the great low maintenance reliability of electronic ignition (no points, hoorah!), but the 1.3 has more advance, and lighter weights for a more rapid advance; which the F10 seems to love! |

How close a descendent is the Barina Spark to the Suzuki F10A? Is there a chance that the cylinder spacings, head bolt location and water/oil galleries are the same or at least close enough to be interchangeable? The manifold may be wrong, but it the 16v head fitted then I would be happy to make a custom intake manifold. I had a mate with a F10 quad carb, looked like a dogs breakfast but went really well. |

The Spark is merely an update of the Matiz, so I expect it's all very similar. I know 3 cyl Matiz (which have an updated version of the F8b) have the same bell housing pattern so I assume the 1ls are the same. The problem is they didn't really sell any 1ls. Pity the head bolts are under the rocker cover, makes it hard to measure but looking at this they look pretty well spot on. http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/56831 ... rolet.html Oil galleries are completely different though. For a comparison to the F10a head, here's this. The oil feed is the small round hole between 2-3 on the intake side. http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/50581 ... _head.html The Spark has a timing chain too, unlike the belt on an F10a. There's also the water galleries on the back of the head but there's a shitload of space to deal with that in an LJ. IMO you'd be much better of pursuing an F6b head from a JDM Cervo. The manifold would clear the bonnet but the TB is still in the wrong spo, they are belt driven, generally more likely to have more in common due to the age and they're turbo'd. |
