Post subject:  new grand vitara - which AT tyres?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for recommendations for AT tyres to replace the stock tyres on my GV3.
Sadly spend much more time on bitumen, but want more capability off road - looking for good all rounders. more likely to be on sand than mud but you never know.
thinking standard size tyres, as I have no lift - and the manual gearing is already a bit tall IMHO.

cheers

Buy a spare set of rims and put some 245/75 16 mud terrains on them. Just my opinion, but better to have a road tyre for the road and an offroad tyre for the dirt than a compromise AT tyre for both. Especially if you are only occasionally going offroad.

Gearing will be more of a problem, but you get grip and a fraction more clearance.

And you don't need lift to fit bigger tyres.

225/75/16 fit with no lift and no scrubbing.
245/75/16 fit with but just touch inner guard on full lock

thanks for the info guys
having done some research it's easiest to get a good price on the maxxis at the moment.
i'm told the 225 75 16s come in 8 and 10 ply
8 ply - $195 ea
10 ply - $ $230 ea

tyre guy is recommending 8 ply (which surprised me)

what do you guys think?

Why did that surprise you? 8 ply tyres will be lighter, ride better, and respond better to being aired down (as in deform at a higher pressure) Personally, I'd prefer 6 ply/load range C for a car like a GV, and it's likely that that's what the stock tyres are.

You don't need 10 ply tyres for a light car.

I have seen this a bit though. It seems that 225 75 and 245 75 are commonly used on US pickups with huge load ratings, so it's common to see these tyres with 10 ply/load range E construction.

He's not gong to want you to come back and complain that you were sold the wrong tyre though and then have to swap them/piss off a customer.
