Hi all, my 92 efi, auto Vit is very restricted under load. I can drive it around, slowly increasing the revs and drives OK up to a point but when I try and put the foot down, it seems like it missing heaps or retarded. When out of gear, it idles not too bad and it will freely rev hard but when in gear it won't rev freely when you put your foot down to go. I have only recently got the car and the guy I bought it off said something was replaced (he wasn't sure, may have been the air flow sensor ) and when he got it, it would barely run so he moved the distributor back towards the firewall almost all the way just to get it going. So far I have replaced all oils, spark plugs, air filter, and cleaned the air flow sensor. I haven't checked the timing yet but with the dizzy all the way back, it looks like I won't have much adjustment. Any ideas please? Could the timing belt have jumped a tooth or 2 perhaps? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a blocked fuel filter. It would be worth checking the keyway for the crank pulley as well.

X2 for the keyway I reckon. I can't see how the timing belt can "jump a tooth"'without destroying itself. If it's out a tooth, someone put it together wrong, which is quite possible.

Rule out fuel filter and put a timing light on it.

X3 for checking the keyway. The one time I had an annoying timing "gremlin" like this it was a flogged-outkeyway.

OK, thanks everyone so far. I'll replace the fuel filter next to rule that out. Will it be obvious to see if the keyway was loose? Which plug do I need to jump the pins in to be able to put the timing light on it?

Seems to be a common issue on G series engines. That darn tensioner spring tends to snap an end off then falls into the vicinity of the lower cam belt pulley. While it gets munched up between the belt and the pulley the timing belt jumps a tooth or more.

Agree with chucking a timing light on it and having a suss while giving it a few revs.

OK, just pulled the crank pulley off and, damn, flogged out keyway. I was hoping I'd be right as the motor has only done 150000kms. But I kind of suspected trouble when the Crank bolt was quite easy to undo. Anyway, next question is, where abouts can I get a new key and pulley from (can't find anything on eBay). Any help with these questions greatly appreciated.

Just a shameless bump for this. Did you end up fixing this? I am having very similar issues with my G16b Vitara.
