just a different car... biggest in qld is 1600 no ifs buts maybes Hell I stuck a 302 cleveland in a sierra and it was damn ugly, but was no where legal best bet is a 1.6 injected vitarda engine or one of those horrible heavy toyota strolla engines if you want to go fast in a car which is designed to go slow. |

You may not have to. Contact Qld Transport and have them give you the list of Authorised Officers. These are people that are authorised to blue plate certain modifications. Go through the list and find someone that holds the LA1 code. They will be able to tell you what you need to do. |

Do they not allow the option 3 under LA1 any more? Replacement engine with "safety upgrade" they called it. |

your bestbet would be to ring the queensland traffic organisation and ask for some automotive engineers that they recommend. then call the engineer and ask if you can put it in your zook and be abel to register it. you have to ask him what you would need to do to be able to register it. (now would be a good time to go and visit him and write everything down that he says) if he says its possible, which you might find isnt in QLD, ring around for quotes on everything that the bloke tells you. then sit back and think is it worth it over a 1.6L vitara motor. (which happns to be a very well suited motor for a sierra, with plenty of tech support from this site in particular along with plenty of others.) dont rush into something is all im trying to say..... yeh a sr20 would be plenty powerfull, but you need to work out what you want to do first, but all the best of luck to you. i hope you keep us all posted |

I recall somewhere in the rule book that it was the car's weight times by some magic number = the maximum allowable capacity engine to be fitted. This was obviously different for forced induction and rotaries. |

because of the wieght of the sierra,1600cc limit N/A(naturally asperated)...1300cc limit F/I(forced induction) into a sierra in qld, also you cant legally turbo a commertial vehicle(mc)which is the code for a sierra,UNLESS it is a 4x4,so if you where to convert a sierra to 2wd,no go on the turbo.i just got my g13b turbo mod plated possible engines N/A: g13a/ba with throttle body injection g13b(twincam,efi swift gti engine) g16a(carbi vitara engine, needs adaptor plate)suzuki g16b(Efi sohc vitara engine, needs adaptor plate)suzuki g16b with g13b head(twincam efi head off gti swift)suzuki hybrid 4age(twincam efi engine, needs toyota t-50 box,,and custom tail shaft)toyota F/I: g13ba(later model carbi) g13a/ba with supercharger/turbo(draw through with carbi) g13a/ba with throttle body injection and turbo/supercharged g13b turbo/supercharged(swift gti with turbo/supercharger) and there is also a turbo diesel engine that fits if my memorty is correct... there are heaps of othere engines, but these are the most practicle and "cheaper" options.... |

Yes that's correct, or at least it used to be. Whether it is still the case I don't know. This is the "option 3" I mentioned in my earlier post. |

Sure you can get it blue plated by convincing an engineer but qld transport will just ask you WHY do you want to go fast in a car that is not designed to. Blue plate cancelled. Check a lot of places, get many answers but this will be the common answer. Read this pamplet http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resourc ... icles2.pdf E.G. A registered blue plate modifcation guy told me that the rules where to be re-analysed and the outcome might be we take the same rules as NSW or alternatively we will get even stricter rules |

I said get it in writing. I go to my engineer who "in the real world" imports cars, designs and builds trucking equipment for major companies ( energex, Air Liquide, etc) has a love affair with the motor car and who gets most of his income by doing modifications to motor vehicles also in the real world. I am not sure what he does in his fantasy worlds but you are free to ring him on 1800 1234567 . The rule is 1600cc biggest engine in sierra. Forget this light vehicle 4wd drive nonsense, qld transport call a sierra a car. full stop. not a truck, not a commercial vehicle ( even though it is) they make it follow the rules that they like. |

thats true but soo harsh at the same tme...no need to argue...seriously,if what you hear is not what you like, and you cant appreciate the time some people take to reply, than just grow up and "walk away", there seem to be so many oppinions on the same topic...obiously there are going to be dodgy engineers, who will blue plate "nearly anything"...but that dosnt change the rules...or the code of practice(and thats a nice bed time book:S) there are sooo many grey and contradicting areas, soo it is possible so sometime avoid the red tape, but if you go to an engineer and he says he will mod plate ur rig...go for it....but when you get pulled over by queensland transport, and they say otherwise...that lil blue plate may as well be an expensive vin number relocater!!!so what do we get out of all this?? play nice and what you hear may not nessesarly be true, even if it comes from a person in authority(ju7st like those jolly blue men!!!) "sorry mate that spare tire is illegal"...(copper) "ah you dont say!well thats nice, because you dont need to have a spare, nevermind one with legal tread,or one that even fits my car"(my engineer).... "ah and where did you get that from?"(copper looking confused) "ahh im an engineer,i certify cars for a living, and that magical book told me so"(engineer,a tad bit cocky) bottom line...know your rules....cops love to pull crap out the air,and if you fall for it,they book, and it hurts laters ps:sorry about that got bored and carried away..haha...shame |

Sure if you know the rules and you are right stand up for yourself but remember they are being paid to be there and you are the one standing on the side of the road wasting time so don't make it more painful than it needs to be. Best advise I gave to my young fella was if you get pulled over in this (modified) Suzuki its...yes sir no sir three bags full sir.....saved his licence a few times. On top of that braging that you are an engineer that certifies cars for a living probably doesn't fit with the beaten up old Suzuki with a bald tyre on the tailgate that you were driving when he pulled you up . But I do agree with Unique_seek in that the rules are grey and not everyone who professes to be an expert is. If you go outside of the mods that are widely recognised as legal then you have to take the risk of it coming back to bite you. |

| Post subject: | Re: sr20 suzuki |
there are several 'levels' of mod approval in QLD too there is a set standard of what can be approved in what (like 1.6 in sierra, 5.0 in 40 series, 289 in a capris and so on) this is what the approved person mod plate scheme is about, DOT engineers determine whats safe in regards to engine size for standard equip and the approved person checks if it has been done properly to set rules (no ziptie engine mounts) and approves it, they are allowed nor qualified to make judgement calls on other 1 off things as they dont have the knowledge to work out the ins and outs of it all, this is why bigger tyres are a no, you can get them approved but you need to go to very high powers and spend $$$ testing they still meets requirments. after that there is the next level of weight times xxx = engine capacity and brings up some huge numbers, but these are maximum allowable and rely on driveline upgrades and brake increases and so on, right down to the correct size fuel lines being fitted, this is obviously outside the scope of a dude taking $80 off you and sticking a bit of tin on your firewall, you need to start with a plan on what you want and how you are going to do it then they initially approve this (after lots of changes no doubt) then inspect things as you go per a pre set shecdule, this cost mega $$$$$$$$$$ so nobody touches it then there is the ICB system, this is where kit cars, tube buggies, sierra bodied v8 patrols and so on fall under, basically there is no 1 major starting vehicle so an overall set of standards are applied and you have to document how you confirm to all this which is then approved in theory and then inspected in real life and you get a VIN to stick on and off you go this costs even more mega $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ it can all be done but sooner or later you have to ask is it worth it? I would rather put the effort into something no compramise in what you want over sticking a big engine in a little car for no real benefit |

Jas you are the one arguing. If you can get this sr20 blue plated by your mechanic then go right ahead. Just you may have trouble if you are ever lucky enough to be pulled over by a police officer that actually knows some rules or better yet by qld transport Heaven forbid if you have a questionable accident that takes a life, then you should take that blue plate and stick up your arse so when bubba says "come her boy" you know you can hurt him too. And before Royce says it, it has to be proved that the modification was a major contributor to the accident, so by over powering a car and not doing the regulated brake upgrades that required, and all other safety improvements it is going to be a high possibility it will. |
