hey, ive got a v6 vitara, and want to check if it has any faults as i dont think its running quite right, ive read somewhere about hooking up a jumper somewhere and counting engine light flashes, but i need more details, or a link, i had a search but couldnt find anything useful. thanks guys

If the CEL isn't on, there are no active fault codes, so there's nothing to be read using the jumper method - having said that - the ECU does store codes from previous failures, but you need a reader to display them - either a Dealer's GM TechTool or take a look at Rhinoman's RhinoView software - he also has the cables to connect to the ECU - the connector is under the driver's side dash.

Please note - Rhinoview is a work in progress - it may not include a complete configuration set for your ECU, but it's extensible.

Really, my experience is the opposite to what you are saying.

As an example I've got a lazy O2 sensor that will flash the CEL light in the same conditions every time, with it disappearing once I lift the throttle slightly & won't permanently light the CEL!

That error code will be stored on the ECU along with all the other errors until the battery has been disconnected & can be retrieved by using the jumping method.

Using the jumper method the CEL light will flash the error codes out as listed on the word document I posted in that other link.

Also just to add about reading fault codes, you cant use a ELM327 based OBD2 bluetooth adapter. well not in Australia but overseas models you can.

thanks atari, i will try it it out and see what it comes up with, im just downloading a program to view a doc file, so your doc is for a j20a but will still be applicable for my h20a?

they do differ slightly being a 6 cylinder, eg 2 o2 sensors & more coil packs but are essentially the same. i'll try & dig out the list of error codes for the H25a

Okies, since I'm new to the GV scene I take it that the comp is what they call OBD2?????? If so there are apps for your phone that require a blue tooth adapter.

they don't work on suzuki's as they run a different protocol even thought they have an OBDII plug (On Board Diagnostics)

The Suzuki specifications do seem to suggest this but I've been playing around with my Vit ECU and I've noticed that I get an idle switch fault which remains stored as a current fault with the CEL off when the TPS is off idle, it seems that it needs to go through a couple of drive cycles clear before it gets moved to history. I don't use the jumper method but it seem logical that the fault could be read using the CEL method.
Most codes will definitely clear immediately the fault clears and can then only be accessed by a scan tool.
