Post subject:  VITARA H25 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT....... HELP PLEASE?

Hi All,

As the title suggests, a mate has a 1999 Vitara wagon and the CHECK ENGINE light comes on, he has been to a mechanic and the scan tool says 051 EGR. When he checked with SUZUKI, a replacement cost of $549.00 was quoted. Does the EGR need to be replaced or can it be serviced/ cleaned? Alternately, can you get aftermarket parts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It is most likely that the EGR valve/port is fully blocked with carbon or something like that. I'd suggest you pull it off and clean it out including the ports.

^ what he said. Code 51 means that there is a problem with the EGR system, it doesn't necessarily mean a problem with the EGR valve itself. Code 51 is almost always coked up passageways.

Hi All,

Thankyou for the replies. Any suggestions as to what to use as a cleaning agent? Will we need any gaskets? Also do we only need to clean the EGR valve area in the manifold?

I'd use carb cleaner, theres a metal gasket, you might as well replace that while its off.

Thankyou Rhiniman and JrZook,

We are definitely living in a smaller world, will attempt a cleaning job this weekend.
