here's the first carby question

How much would it cost to redo/recondition/rebuild/whateveryoucallit the carby?

Is it worth trying to do it myself, or pay $400 or what ever it costs to get someone like Carbtech to do it?

sierra carbs dont have any specific vacuum, pre load or gap settings that need special stuff to set, so unless the throttle spindles are worn and have free play or the choke chamber is shot I dont see any need to pay to get it done

BUT

there is a reason it costs so much to do a carby, its a lot of fiddly work and cleaning, all you are doing really is pulling it apart cleaning all the crud out and putting it back together, if you dont get it super clean or put it back together properly it will still be crappy

dont always blame the carby either, poor spark, stuck dizzy weights, wrong plug gap all has an effect, mine has a bit more power and uses less fuel just from fitting a hotter thermostat, even though the choke was turning off before so should of not really made a difference

Hey Steve what do you think Your Carb is Doing?

Is it too rich or lean?

If you rev the .... out of the car and then take your foot off the throttle does it continue to speed up??? (if it does its rich)

Try and work out if its running rich or lean or even OK.

Might help work out if U need a rebuild or look in another area eg Ignition timing

seems to have a lack of power sometimes, like when going up a hill on the highway.

and uses a fair bit of fuel.

Royces 1.3L seems to have more than mine :(

the temp gauge sits really low.

dunno about the thermostat.

Apparently the auto choke thing was jammed on a while ago and it was running really rough, but my cousin (gary) disconnected the choke which fixed that.

I don't flog it at all, maybe that's the problem

It's not that important, but would be good to sort out eventually, would be good to reduce the amount of fuel consumption for some future long distance trips.

reason I ask is my choke worked fine, was all set properly but after putting the proper thermostat in I find it has a bit more go on the highway and uses a little less fuel, my guage sits just under the little temp symbol now, so not quite halfway, before was about 3mm off cold

OK steal of thread time.....

SJ413 1.3 LWB carb problem

rebuilt carb w/carb kit ....
redone intake manifold gasket

idles more smoothly now but still have the same problem....

There are several small hoses running around the carb mostly to do with pollution control & such. Often the problem you mention occurs when these become cracked or blocked.

Sometimes blocking said hoses also has the desired effect.

For me, carbies are a job I leave to the pros.

Then there is always the fact that zooks are temperamental little so and so's that don't alway do what they are meant to do.

I've had similar probs over the years with 1.3's and even though everything seems to be right they just don't play. Even to the point of swapping the carby over and still having the problem.

There are a lot of smart people that come to this site, hopefully they will have a suggestion.

A bog down from idle is normally the idle mixture is to lean or the accelerator pump isnt right, did you get the ball and spring in the bottom of it right?
