Gday guys just bought my 2nd jim.

It has 31s on it but stock gearing ATM, just seeing what everyone's opinions are, what gearing should I get or just buy a sierra transfer etc

Options valued thanks

Beach driving, you can just use the Jimny case with gears in it

Rock driving, SJ case and 4.9s for decent on road and off.

Would be more mud/rock driving. I want more km/hr at less revs also. So u think 4.9s in SJ transfers the go josh?

As in when its in 2wd I want it to drive stock like on the road and less revs than now etc

Yeah, I have 30s and 4.16s and tows and drives really nicely. Off road I need a touch more lowrange then I have, so on 31s you should get the best of both worlds.

not going to happen, you can't have you cake & eat it too.

reduction gears/sierra case will bring it back to stock or better, but it's pointless trying to drop the revs significantly in high range as it will be out of it's powerband.

EDIT ^^^ what he said.

Get 30"s there fine without reduction gears.

think this is the one, gives "transfer gear to lowdown for about 58% of the LOW range only" i dont mind the 30's on stock gearing too much, but everything is flat here. im only geting the tj gears so i can tow better.

If u want more speed at less revs dont do nothing, you already have it. 31s and stock gearing, remember u are traveling faster than u speedo says. Problem is as u prob can notice, its shit and powerless. Unless u drive on flat ground and like burn clutch.

If I was you id try to bring it back to stock gearing by either trialjimny gears or sierra case with gears to get extra low.

Remember Jimnys are build to rev. To do 100km/h at 4000rpm(depending on model). This is not a Navara, it wont do 2000rpms. Get used to it or get a louder stereo system lol

And if its fuel economy what worries you, you prob doing better fuel ecc. doing the 4000rpms than a Navara ;)

Haha getting around 800kms to tank in navara so it's probably the same as a jimny size and volume comparison. Yeh I'm not worried about fuel consumption just the sluggyness will be the issue.

if you gear down in high and low, it will be a lot less sluggish.
if your not in the optimum torque range then your using 4th all the time to get and maintain 100kph on any kind of slight up hill, and only using 5th when coasting.
gear it to stay on the high side of the stock rpm
my 2009 manual indicates ~3450@ 100. with Trial jimny 20% gears ill be doing ~4140 for 100K indicated, but only doing 3625 when the speedos corrected for 30"s

My Jimny on 31s get 10-11L on the highway and 12L around town.

For comparison, my wifes stock 2001 Jimny gets 8L/100km. It'll be interesting to see how that changes if I ever get around to installing the lift kit and adding biger tyres.

Post subject:  Re: What gears for jimny running 31s

tyres make the biggest difrence. more rolling friction on the move, and geting up to speed way more tyre to accelerate, which is energy lost as soon as your using the breaks. so in traffic it would be a killer
plus when putting on larger tyres, its tempting to pic a tread pattern that is less efficient on road.
