Hi,
As the subject says, I'm trying to figure out a mounting method to get my hi-lift jack mounted onto this basket

Id like to go for an "on-top" mounting method so it doesnt have load on the side edge of the unit. Although if someone has a nifty way of mounting on the side like most methods, I'm all ears! Any ideas?

I dont want to turn this into a "hi-lifts are shit why bother" thread, so I dont want to hear it unless its on-topic. At the end of the day I have one, so I want to have a solid way of mounting it. :sup:

The "rim" of the basket appears to be rectangular - if it is, get a couple of long bolts, drill through the rim, insert the bolt from underneath, secure with a nut (plus flat washers & lock washers), drop the high lift over and secure with wing nuts.

Alternatively secure a couple of "Quick Fists" to the rim and strap it down with those.

Good idea Fordem thanks, kinda obvious really when I think about it..... it is the end of a 180hr fortnight though, my brain is working at limited capacity.

what are quick fists?

i rate those highly.
It kind of looks like i could just bolt them straight through the SHS of the rail.

Im thinking i couldnt put them on the front/rear bars though, would have to be halfway along the side rail as the jack is almost the exact length of the basket.

Not a "hi-lifts are shit why bother" comment but highlifts weigh a bit, is there no where lower on the car to mount it? Instead of on top of the tallest thing on your car

Jimnys have a bit of a high cog to start with, and a suspension design which doesn't assist stability. Adding 15kg that far above the cars cog and over the wheels is a terrible idea IMHO. It's also the worst place for the hi lift because its in the weather, getting smacked on stuff etc.

But seriously if you guys have a better mounting idea ill consider it. Otherwise im going to keep looking at the roofrack as a viable option.

So I apparently can't disagree with someone because that makes me a hater and I can't agree with someone else because that makes me a seagull. Nice work Joel.

A highlift in the centre if the roof will have less effect on the car than above the gutter or over the wheels if viewed from the front or rear of the car. It's a bad place for any weight, and a really bad place for something mechanical you have to trust to not injure you. The best place for a hilift is stripped down and in the car out of the weather where it's not screwing with the cog.

Stripping the jack down and bolting the rail and handle to the cargo barrier, and putting the feet and mechanism in a box would be my preference.

I knew the topic was going to be de-railed with negative stuff on the hi-lifts and mounting etc thats why i tried to keep it on topic from the start. Ive heard all the arguments before, so really didnt want this thread going that direction.

Cargo barrier sounds like a good idea too atari, cheers bud, ill have to measure up to see if it'd work out. Might be more hassle than its worth though. I did think about getting a barrier quite some time back... may have to re-visit that idea.
Anyway got some ideas now Ill have a good look into it. Bolt idea with a bit of rubber to stop vibes probably stands out the easiest solution in the meantime.

Or dismantle like you say steve, but keep the rail/handle on the roofrack and mech in my drawer. Thats probably a good way too.

I would be inclined to use the basket to get light things up high, so you have room for heavy things down low.

Alternatively Modify your spare wheel holder to also have a holder for this high lift widget?

Jimny tailgate definitely wouldn't like the weight of a High Lift Jack.

After having one on my roof for two hours last weekend I agree it would be preferable to have it low. If I was going to carry one on the roof I'd aim to have it in the middle of the basket but that's ridiculously space wasting of course. The one that was on my roof had a great clamping system but you'd need the matching basket for it to work. I reckon as long as the rest of the weight on the roof was loaded in a way that counter balanced the jack it would probably be a lot better.

How heavy is the high lift?

A wheel and tyre is not light on its own, so id say the tailgate is built for more weight than normal.

Sure dont go swining it back and forwards all day, but i'd put one there and incorporate the tow bar to take some weight.

Hilifts are about 15Kg. I don't know how bad Jimny's are specifically, but lots of cars suffer from sag and "flutter" of the back door even with a stock tyre on them, let alone with a wider and heavier tyre. I'm calling "flutter" where the top of the door bounces away from the seal and sucks dust, normally as the car is on corrugations.

Adding a hilift right out the back beyond the tyre adds enormous stress to the door due to the leverage - how far the weight is hanging past the mounting point of the tyre.

I think putting the rail and or handle on the rack isn't a bad idea so long as the mechanism is in the car - I reckon the mechanism weighs nearly as much of the rest of the jack put together.

However, the handle is super handy, so I reckon I'd clip that to the inside of the back door or somewhere it's easy to get to, bury the mechanism and foot plate elsewhere, and maybe put the rail on the roof in the middle or something,

I know it's going to be a bit of a PITA to get to, but in all honesty hilifts are always a bit of a PITA to sort out to get ready to use, mostly because they need to be so securely mounted due to their weight. They normally need a tool like a wheel brace or something to remove them.

Unless you are using it as a hand winch there's no reason you couldn't cut it down shorter. I don't think the regular jimny needs a 48" long jack.

What about using the tow bar tongue as a support for the baseplate, or make some sort of carrier that uses the tow bar.

Yep, done this to get one across the inside of the tailgate of a Sierra. didn't have to take much off.

wow. all good responses (almost lol) Cheers.

Ive actually already got a spare-tyre mount on my car but I use that to hold my fibreglass shovel when i go out. have tried mounting the jack there but it looks SOOOOO dodgy with that much weight back there. the shovel is much better use for it.

Mounted to the left top side of my roll cage. With the uprated springs I have now, I don't notice the extra weight.

They may or may not suit your square tubing. LROR also has a couple of other mounting systems.

I would try get it in the car
hi lifts suck when they get rusty from sitting out side
they need to be clean and lubed for the pins to move freely

get a bag and c if u can make it fit behind the seats

mount it in the shed/garage & get a decent hydraulic bottle jack.
